Exactly what I was thinking!
However, I find solace in the fact that my entry was composed specifically for this contest.

The contest was good enough to learn something new in sounddesign. So it's more than ok for me. :D

Ok so since Synth1 still seems pretty awesome, I had to accept the situation and use the plugin with the following limitations (all of which would make it + the host crash):
  • No other filters than LP24
    No unison
    No phasing effects
    No presets
https://soundcloud.com/toggleaudio/toggleaudio-helsinki

Used instruments and effects:
15 x Synth1
6 x Stereo Delay
6 x Channel Eq
5 x Space Designer
2 x Compressor
1 x Multipressor
1 x Gain
1 x Limiter

Hi!

You might not know me, but I like to listen to the One Synth Challenges from time to time... I took part once, in the Any-Synth-Challenge, where I chose Massive and ended up somewhere in the last places... I played around with OBXD last month, which I really liked but couldn't get over not using distortion... now with Synth1 I don't have that problem and want to enter again.

My track is not really finished (I guess I never made a finished one yet...) and the mix could probably be made better... maybe I will work on it again and update it, but probably not, and I want to show it to you guys and maybe you can tell me what you think about it.

Here is my song -- composed just for this OSC. Synth 1 was a little rough for me. In the 64 bit AU version only the LP24 and LPDP filters worked. I ended up having to use the Effect Section Analog and Digital Distortions and built in EQ for tone control a lot. The controls would randomly jump around sometimes. Also, it crashed a lot and had some trouble staying in time, even with quantizing. The worst though was when I changed my I/O buffer size to try to stop the crashes, it lost a number of my custom presets. I had saved most so that was ok, but had to re-build others which, of course, never quite sounded the same. It would also forget midi controller assignments to synth controllers if I closed the project, so the project has been open for two weeks and I finally had enough.

Mostly original sounds from INIT Patch. Two or three started as presets but got significantly changed.

I would like to visit this topic a bit more :-?

All my previous advocating was based on the idea that an actual "new" composition would be created specifically for the current month. Even if it had elements or ideas from previous works the final result in it's entirety would be something that did not exist previously. My questioning then was more in regards to how much influence the older work can have in the new work that is specifically created for the competition.

That is a distinct separate issue(in my mind anyway) from what I am going to ask for clarification on now.

I had not listened to the other tracks prior to the earlier conversation about this topic. I usually don't listen to anything until my track is 'complete' so I am not influenced by what other people were able to get the synth to do. That way if I ever do anything that sounds 'similar' to another entry I can honestly say it is pure coincidence.

Now that I have listened to all the entries submitted at the time of my beginning to write this post (I happened to stop at the quoted post on my second pass through the thread) the issue of "specifically for this contest" has again arisen for me.

What should happen to a track that does not meet an individual's interpretation of the "spirit of the rule"?

I am being a bit vague here because I do not want to throw anyone's track under the bus over a potential misunderstanding. But I am somewhat at a loss as to what to do about voting for a track that could be afoul of this particular rule. Having doubts about a tracks validity for the contest makes me want to refrain from voting at all for that particular track, but that would put me afoul of other rules. And the artist (from my perspective) does not seem open to personal discussion on this particular matter so simply asking them for clarity seems off the table at the moment.

Do I treat it as I do tracks that violate the very first rule on the rules page?
That happens almost every month, and it is, IMHO a very clearly worded rule. But other than a bit of grumble to myself about how can I follow the complex subjective rules when others can't follow the simple easy rules I tend to overlook that particular violation when voting. The other contestants don't seem bothered by it, in fact I have read opinions where the violation of that rule is prefered. So I let it go, despite my personal feelings about following rules. I am fine with following a past practice interpretation made by people with more experience than me in this contest.

Or is this rule about "specifically for this contest" a more important rule, similar to not using pitch altering effects and should be enforced as strongly?
From the quantity of discussion it seems more important to more contestants than the simple track naming rule which is why I am asking what the consensus is on how to treat it.

@Frostline

I'm going to take another crack at this.

One of the great things about this contest, as far as voting goes, is that there are no rules governing how you vote other than you must vote for every track.

Therefor, if, in your personal opinion, you think that a track has violated one or more "rules" of the contest, simply vote accordingly. Nobody is going to reprimand you for doing that. Personal opinion can't be wrong. The whole contest is purely subjective. Some people vote a track highly because it has a good beat and is EDM. Others because of a complex dissection of every aspect of the song. Neither method is right or wrong. And until they specifically put in rules that say "You must vote for song, mix, beat, originality, etc." and actually put in slots to place individual scoring slots for each of these things, you can give a track a 1 or a 5 for whatever reason you want.

Ultimately, because there are many people voting, the anomalies, if there are any, won't really matter and the "most popular" tracks will win. Notice I said most popular and not "best" because all of this is subjective to one's taste and taste has nothing to do with good or bad music.

TLDR - Do whatever you want when you vote and don't worry about it. You're making this harder than it needs to be.

Frostline --

If you think that someone has violated the rules, send a personal message to BJ and let him handle it. He will speak to the person with the questionable entry and make a determination.

As far as the whole "original song" aspect of OSC, I always approach each month with a totally clean slate and let the sounds of the synth point me in a direction. I also try to think larger concept and think I pretty much end up with something different than I've ever done before. That being said, there are stylistic similarities that can come up over and over. I like soft beginnings that build -- so many of my songs have that. Similar concept + different notes = new song. Many of the OSC participants go out of their way to experiment with different styles and types of compositions that are out of their comfort zones, which is a huge positive.

As Wags pointed out, there are thousands of songs that use the same chords, but what you do with them, especially if it is driven by the capability and sound of the synth of the month is what makes an original song for OSC. If you use C - Am - F - G but put a fresh melody and feel on it, you have not committed plagiarism. If you blatantly use a melody that is clearly derivative of another song you should change it.

As composers we all probably have little bits and pieces of songs that we've come up with over the years, and yes, some of those will make their way into OSC entries. That's a normal part of the creative process. As long as the overall piece is driven by the sounds of the synth and an overall concept that is specific for that month, I think it's ok.

At the end of the day it's an honor system. If someone has a song that they've been working on for themselves, and repurposes it for the OSC, nobody is going to know anyway, so it's kind of a moot point. This is a fun and friendly contest that allows us to challenge ourselves. In my opinion, If someone wants to cheat, they're really cheating themselves more than the rest of us.

Last -- I agree with Wags. If you feel that someone has violated the rules or the spirit of the competition, give them a low score. They may ask you once the scores are published why that is, and it's up to you to answer or not.
