Here's a thought: Some of those agile lute parts he wrote as accompaniments are worthy enough to be played as solos. Here's another: He likely played and sang his pieces, i.e. he was both singer and player, at least we have no indication to the contrary. Given the complexity of parts in a song like Come Heavy Sleep that's a remarkable level of skill.

Thanks so much for this. For once, a moment to talk about *music*, in this small hijacking of a thread about 'depressing music'. The subject matter, literary content, is depressing.

Having said that, there is always good music being made, but these days its on "independent" labels.
What you don't understand is that "record companies" are in business to make money, not pamper stars. Yes, they do that, but in the end it's always about scratching someones back. Also, do some research on the failures of the music business. Like one hit wonders, records that failed to sell, or terrible deals that left them wishing they hadn't.

Like it or not, it's a business. You have to be good or REALLY lucky to make it.

I think you are confusing the term "music" with the term "music business". Big difference.

Such a plaintive song, beautifully sung, I love how the 'ghost' of the background voice starts to take over as the song progresses

Any music by squeakily voiced, very dubiously marketed, 'overly-genki', highly controlled J-Pop girls gets my vote.
(And I lived in Japan for 4 years).

Tubular bells by Mike Oldfield (made when he was 19!) - I really liked the album, but sometime after I watched a movie called the 'Exorcist' ... lo and behold it is the blooming theme music and I could never listen to the album again!

Seriously, the connection between the two completely threw me - so for an unusual (?) reason the album scores high on my 'depressing' list!
