Agreed! For $100 each, it's kind of ridiculous to not just get both. In a hardware studio, $100 just gets you some of your cables and that's about it!Buckster wrote:after reading this thread and struggling between Dune 2 or Spire

It would be great if i could use OSC´s from layer 2,3,4....to modulate OSC´s from other layers.
But then Dune 2 would be really a little modular synth and the cpu might explode.
At least you can do some interesting stuff for sure f.e. if you modulate OSC1 via OSC2 which is modulated by OSC3 and then you can further use ultra fast MSEG´s and LFO´s .
Also you can do experiments like using it on 3 layers but do some modulations more on one of them etc. etc.
Dune 2 can´t do all but it is so freaking versatile.....the most versatile "EDM" synth

I dislike it not having mod envelopes. Need to use two mseg note on and using a second note off to replicate a normal adsr! is damn bad experience! Only negative i have to say!Cinebient wrote:It would be great if i could use OSC´s from layer 2,3,4....to modulate OSC´s from other layers.

Thanks, will try this.cytospur wrote:Use the sine phase change wavetable, set wt position to 50. In the mod matrix apply osc1 feedback using osc1 as source and osc1 wt position as destination. Use 15 as the amount of modulation. This will give you a saw like waveform. Then use a second oscillator with a saw wave and use that to modulate osc1 wt position as a separate mod matrix entry. Probably not exactly what you want, but a step in the right direction!recursive one wrote:This is why I'm trying to use the modmatix instead of native FM. I'm trying to replicate the sound you get when you FM a saw wave for another saw wave 2 octaves lower in Virus, Nordlead or Discovery - a kind of "electricity" sound often used in psytrance. So far my best results in replicating this sound in a synth which doesn't allow saw to saw FM were made by modultaing a pitch of an oscillator with a very fast LFO in Spire.cytospur wrote: The native FM oscillator in D2 is made of sine waves only.
Edit: you might want to have both oscillators to reset phase for a consistent sound, you might not
Actually I'm not aiming at an exact recreation of that Virus sound (I have the original soundsource), I'm more interested in different variations of it, or other cool sounds which may happen to be made as a by-product

@r1 do you have that as a wave file?

You mean the sound itself? I have some examples of tracks with this sound. Or I could record an isolated sound for you

No matter how much i like Dune 2 and how much i think Dune 2 is much better then Sylenth1 i cant deny the fact that Sylenth1 distortion FX is just unique sounding. Its personal but i think distortion in Sylenth1 is one of the best, much better then Dune 2.

I'll record the sound from Virus for you in few days. Or you may download Discovery Pro demo and follow these stepscytospur wrote:The isolated sound would be great!
initialise preset
select saw, PWM or square for osc 1
select saw for osc 2
set semitones for osc 2 at -24
change FM amount between about 50% and 75% (the modulation of FM amount is an important part of this sound as typically used)
Not the most mellow/sweet sound in the world but very psytrance-ish

Indeed i find the distortion not the best in Dune 2 too....but JAWS from Repro-1 is above everything i heard yet in software...maybe because it's 32X oversampled.Elektronisch wrote:No matter how much i like Dune 2 and how much i think Dune 2 is much better then Sylenth1 i cant deny the fact that Sylenth1 distortion FX is just unique sounding. If i could take my favourite FX from synths i own and put it into Dune2
I would use Jaws as distortion/wavefolder, Alchemy 2's phaser and modFX is also the most interesting i heard yet (even compared to some stand alone FX plug-ins) in this area.
Then i would like to have a more versatile delay (something like the one in Falcon)......
Well, there is more but maybe Dune 3 will please us all (i doubt

Jaws in RePro 1 is amazing! Also my compliments goes to distortion module in Harmor.

LOL...i would take all D16 FX units and build it into Dune3, if it were up to meCinebient wrote:Indeed i find the distortion not the best in Dune 2 too....but JAWS from Repro-1 is above everything i heard yet in software...maybe because it's 32X oversampled.Elektronisch wrote:No matter how much i like Dune 2 and how much i think Dune 2 is much better then Sylenth1 i cant deny the fact that Sylenth1 distortion FX is just unique sounding. I'd be happy with no fx. I dont see the point of fx built into synths. There are so many quality fx out there.
It also means when a lot of so called 'sound designers' make the factory banks, they drown everything in fx. Not good.

Sometimes yes but for FX which i can modulate (some even at audio rate...but not in Dune 2) is an important part for a patch.AnX wrote:I'd be happy with no fx. I dont see the point of fx built into synths. There are so many quality fx out there.

Synths with FX i can't modulate are not so my thing and indeed i prefer than extern FX.

I like to have a good synth with good fx or no fx. Since i don't use factory (or third party) presets, i don't care about the overdone fx, usually done by preset makers.AnX wrote:I'd be happy with no fx. I dont see the point of fx built into synths. There are so many quality fx out there.

But, if i use a synth with good fx (i like the verb and delay in The Legend, falcons fx is amazing, diva's reverb is awesome; to name a few), it only enhances my outcome most of the time.
If it isn't doing what i want (codex, element, loom, rapid), i use ext. fx. And even in those cases, the build in fx can bring some refreshing stuff.
