Well, it's that time of year again, and I've saved up some more money to where I can set $100 aside for something music related. Right now, my setup is as follows:

Ableton Live Suite 7.0.18(Owned by my dad)
Audiobox USB
Studio One 3 Artist
M-Audio Code 61
Hybrid 3(From the Code)
Loom(From the Code)
Xpand!2
Sonivox Orchestral Strings Companion
CM Plugin Vault
MiniGrand(From the Code)
DB-33(From the Code)
Velvet(From the Code)
Tannoy Reveal speakers(Borrowed from my dad)
ATH-M40x(broken, but I was given an MDR-V6 for Christmas, which was unbelievably generous!)

So, last year I got Synthmaster - this year, what? I'm looking at Dune 2 and Spire, obviously, since D2 is on sale for $99. I'd love to peruse the marketplace, but I'm definitely not about to hand somebody my debit card number. Clearly, I have a good arsenal of plugins now, so I'm in no way limiting myself to that this time around. I'm still hooked on Dune 2's sound, so there's a good chance I may just grab that, but I want to get an outside, objective, and impersonal opinion of what would be the most beneficial to complement my current setup. Right now, my genres are hip-hop, EDM, synthwave, and lots of abstraction. I'm also looking at possibly getting Serum on the $10-a-month thing. $100 would get me 10 months of the way, and I'll be releasing my album before July. Plus, my birthday is in July, so if nothing else I might be able to bail myself out then. :hihi:

So, opinions? :)

If you like the sound, go with Dune 2. :) Not much to do wrong at that price point.

Definitely. :) I'm headed to the bank this Thursday to deposit the money, and if I haven't found anything I like better by the 1st, I'll pull the trigger on Dune 2. Mostly, I just want to make sure I'm being as impartial as I can about this, and judging solely based on sound. Spire, apparently, is out of the question, as I'm sticking to a solid $100 budget this time around. So, if anybody knows of anything that would better complement my current setup for $100, let me know. :) And if there's a sale, it can't end before Thursday. :hihi:

Try the Dune II demo. The sale price is great. Other VSTs on sale: DiscoDSP Discovery Pro, and Corona. Fab Filter Twin 2. Sofrtube's Modular can be found for cheap right now (Jrr shop has it for like 62 bucks) but, it's slightly plagued with issues right now...did I say it was cheap?...issues get resolved. Sugarbytes is having a good sale on all their stuff (Obscurium is only 70 bucks right now). Wiggle is only like 66 bucks too, I think. There is a ton of good stuff out on sale right now. You can't go wrong with any of it. You'd probably get the most miles out of Dune II, though.

Thanks for the suggestions. :) I've been demoing Dune 2 again, and the sound still blows me away. Softtube Modular looks pretty amazing for the price, but it also looks a bit overwhelming. :hihi: I think you're right about getting the most miles out of D2, though. I think I'm mostly set on it now... Sorry for clogging the subforum up more, but both of these replies have actually helped me massively. :)

Check out the plentiful freeware and magware options if you feel like you need a new synth, save up a little more if that 100 doesn't get you the upgrade to Live 9.7?

There's been seriously significant improvements to core features and new features since the version you're currently using, as well as new and improved instruments and effects. I think these would benefit you lot more than one more synth.

Honestly, I can do just about everything I need to on version 7. It would be great to have version 9, obviously, but I can live without it very easily. Plus, I have a 9.7 Lite license that I can use if I really need those features. Anyway, the 7 Suite license is shared with me by my dad, and it's up to him when it gets upgraded. Right now, IIRC, he wants to upgrade from DP7 to DP9. I feel like I've basically nailed my workflow, and know how to get everything I need out of what I have in terms of DAWs, and atm I'd prefer to have that rich, premium sound that D2 can do. Because, after all, the sound matters most. :)

So, in the end, it wouldn't benefit me as much, especially with the Synapse sale.

Anyway, sorry if it sounds like I'm rejecting your advice, I do appreciate it. :) I may have set myself up for failure here, making this thread when I've already gotten hooked on a sound. :dog:

Well, it's 10 years of bug fixes as well, and stuff that directly improves sound quality (better sample rate conversion, warp algos, better filters) and one really important thing- latency compensation of automation.

But if you feel like a new synth is what you need, then it is what you need. Dune 2 is a great synth for sure!

Need a little more help.

I took some time to think about it and demo some different things, and I came to a decision. I'm going to get Serum on the rent-to-own plan. :tu: It's by far my favorite sounding SS.

Before i do, though, I want to know one more thing about the plan: when do I pay? Is it the 1st of each month after my first payment, or is it dependent on what day of the month I activate the plan? I have enough money to get me well past June-July, when I can pay the rest of it off. I'm releasing my album then, but I want to use Serum on the album.

Update: Signing up for the rent-to-own on Monday. Would still like to know exactly how the payments work, and if there's a TOS I can access, but...

Pretty sure a new version of Ableton is coming out soon anyhow.

Um, that's great, but it's not related to my current question. :?

Hi mate, if you're on a budget and not averse to a different DAW I've got codes for Cubase LE and Wavelab LE that are sat gathering dust here.
