Anyone have any insights as to why so many people seem to be selling Presonus Studio One v3 in the KVR Marketplace, lately?

Is this something to be concerned about?
Gaslighting...is a form of mental abuse in which information is twisted or spun, selectively omitted to favor the abuser, or false information is presented with the intent of making victims doubt their own memory, perception, and sanity.

Post

Are they selling it, or are they simply advertising it for sale?

It was quite heavily discounted before Christmas so maybe people are trying to make a profit.

Post

Good points. Yeah, it appears that more are posted for sale than actually have sold.

I won't sell mine. ;)

I don't think it's a rash of longtime S1 users suddenly selling....

It's either, as previous poster suggested, people buying low and selling for a profit, or --

-- someone who uses another DAW primarily, and is selling S1 to finance a BF/NY sale purchase.

That's my theory anyway...

Post

Personally I had Studio One Producer V2 laying around for quite some time not being used. During Christmas I had some credit at Musicians Friend so I upgraded to V3 Professional for $99 to try it out. I already have Sonar Platinum with lifetime updates and decided I still liked Sonar better so I sold V3.

I have a home project studio where I use mainly VST instruments and not a ton of effects or tracks, so I didn't really care about the major selling features of S1 (drag and drop, Console FX, scratchpad, mastering suite).

However, Studio One V3 is a very nice DAW with a lot of features. You can get the Professional version for around $150 on the buy/sell forum which is a good deal.

The only thing I've seen complaints about is that it uses more CPU power than other DAWs. Not sure how valid that is but that seems to be the general consensus on the forums. I did notice that my CPU load seemed to be higher than Sonar but I didn't encounter glitching or anything like that.

Post

After many years as a Cakewalk/Sonar user (PA9 to Platinum Lifetime member) as well as REAPER, I switched to Studio One 3 Professional about 2 years ago, haven't looked back, love it, can't say I have an issue with CPU usage, I am lead to believe that going by the built in performance meter can be misleading, as it apparently is only referring to the core which is being hammered the most or something like that, so they say, best to use windows performance meter (or other), I know if you take what the Studio One performance meter is saying, and compare it to the Windows one, there is a HUGE difference in what is being reported. So if the meter in Studio One is reading high but you aren't experiencing any issues, just ignore it. As I said I don't have any CPU issues myself.

Sonar Platinum has had some quite good performance enhancements of late, with plugin load balancing and other stuff, and I recall reading some time back that they were working on cutting the old inefficient code out and replacing it, so it will likely only get better, as it stands now Sonar Platinums performance is really quite good, as is Platinum on the whole, still issues, but what doesn't have issues?

Yeah the performance of Sonar Platinum is good. It's very stable on my Windows 8.1 system. There were recently some stability issues caused by the latest Windows 10 update but those are being ironed out. Some of the Sonar features are a little buggy or need modernization or user-interface tweaking, but all-in-all it's a very good DAW.

It will definitely continue to get better. They release new bugfixes and enhancements monthly. I was able to get Lifetime Updates so that was a major selling point since I don't have to worry about paying for updates and bugfixes. They are working on ripple editing and improving the takes/comping system and those are two things I'm looking forward to a lot.

Question to OP:

Do you own/use Studio One 3? or,

Are you planning to purchase/demo it?

It seems irelevant to base any decision on why threads in that forum would have an influence otherwise, unless one wants to continue another daily bashfest.

Honestly, I may be exaggerating a bit but I'm beginning to think Studio One has taken over as the latest "Whipping Boy" DAW. Granted it is flawed but then it's still useable at least to the people(which may be well over thousands) that are still using and not selling here or anywhere else for that matter.

The good thing I guess is those people get something back from the DAW as they can sell if it don't work for em. :tu:

Studio One is 1) cross-platform (Mac and PC), 2) doesn't require a dongle, 3) allows for resale (some DAW's like Sonar don't), 4) isn't that expensive at full price compared to something like Cubase, 5) is frequently on sale, and 6) is still relatively new (i.e. a lot of people unsatisfied with their longtime DAW might be looking to try something else). On top of that, any Presonus hardware you buy will come with some version of that, which can be upgraded to the full version. Those things all combine to make it pretty popular.

As a result, I think a lot of people buy it with the intent of switching DAWs or just to "check it out." Some stick with it, others find something that works better for them (sometimes sticking with what they know). I suspect they sell a lot of licenses, and as a result, you'll see a lot of second-hand licenses because it's not going to click with everybody.

As a Sonar convert and S1 user for a few years now, there are times, especially on the MIDI side IMO, where Studio One can be a bit frustrating due to it's lack of features. On the other hand, it's incredibly stable on my PC (Sonar never was) and the workflow is incredibly intuitive and fast. I couldn't go back to Sonar, but I get why some people might. There've been times where I've been looking at Cubase because it's much more mature on the MIDI side, but the cost and dongle-just-for-Cubase copy protection method are a turn off (if it were iLok, I'd be in).

Regarding CPU usage, the Studio One "Performance Monitor" makes the CPU usage look incredibly high when it's actually nowhere near as bad as it looks. The Performance Monitor shows the CPU usage of the most stressed core. So one core at 25% CPU and 7 cores at 0% CPU shows as 25% CPU in Studio one, whereas another DAW might only show 3-4% (because those DAWs will average the load across all cores). People see this in Studio One and freak out about CPU usage. Is it as efficient as Reaper? No. Is it as incredibly far off as people make it seem? No. How should you gauge it's CPU usage? Run the same large project and both at the same buffer settings and add plugins and instruments on different channels until you get glitches on playback.

Thanks everyone for your responses!

Here's the rationale behind my question:

On a whim, driven by GAS and a very good price, I did recently purchase Studio One v3 Artist here on the Marketplace. And while I haven't had alot of time to spend with it (I am a newb hobbyist), I liked what I saw, it just made sense to me. So, I decided to purchased the Pro upgrade with the "Christmas Present" marker from my wife. Mostly, because I just couldn't wrap my head around being able to adequately evaluate a DAW with no native VST support.

Anyway, I didn't realize it at the time, but it appears that I purchased a boxed serial number, as I am waiting for it to be delivered. In my giddy anticipation, I've been searching out as much information as I can, and happened to notice that there were a fair number of copies for sale on the Marketplace. Then, in my paranoia with "Buyer's Remorse" getting ready to rear its ugly head, I wondered if I was missing something. :dog:

I don't really read the Marketplace here but if any of the posts are recent some of it may be related to the recent release of Cubase 9. Seem to me that more things that can be sold go on sale whenever something new and shiny shows up.

And of course, I'm also sure some of it has nothing at all to do with that, some people just not being happy with it.

I agree. There are also quite a few Bitwig copies on the market right now. And Cubase 9 is actually quite nice (if you can live with the dongle).

Don't worry. Especially for that upgrade price, it's a no-brainer... i bought Studio One 2 Producer used here, for $45 i think, which translated to about 40-42 €, and then upgraded that version to S1 3 Pro for 96 €, so i paid about 140 € for a full blown DAW, which is every bit as good (IMO) as Cubase. I don't think you did anything wrong. But, if you felt like you did, you can always sell it again, and there's not much (if any) of a loss.

S1 is a great DAW, in the top 3 IMHO. But, it wasn't for me, so I sold it and moved on. A personal choice, and nothing to do with the quality of the product.
