Problem recording live automation in FLstudio 12

So I have a midi controller and have my clips playing on the playlist in songmode. I want to play automation in live (as in moving the controllers live not ableton live) with my controller (eg volume). However when I press record all it does is record the automation into a single clip and stop then the automation is recorded into that clip repeatedly - I cannot get the volume for example to slowly fade in over a 30 seconds, it just records automation into individual clips - even in songmode - Im sure this is a simple setting - anyone know what it is ?
NB - I like to use my interface like an instrument and get tactile - so I like to play the automation in live by twiddling knowbs and faders - not draw it in.

Do you need to do it in realtime or are you OK with plotting points and smooth curves?

Easiest way is to move the mixer channel volume up and down, then click Add > Automation for Last Tweaked Parameter

Then start drawing :)

To really lock it down you can move the parameter you want to automate, for example pulling the instrument volume all the way down to zero, then right click the knob icon at the top and click 'Initiate song in this position' (ensures the parameter starts where you want it to, no matter how you draw the automation) and then click 'Create Automation Clip'. A new editable automation track appears on the Playlist.

Providing the parameter allows it, you can do this for everything from synth cutoff filters to automating the master tempo!

THars interesting about the initiate from this position - but yes - I like to use the controller in realtime (and maybe correct issues by drawing afterwards) - live - like an instrument - this is really easy in say , Nuendo or Cubase, ther emust be a way ..... Ive done it on earlier versions ....

Someone else sussed it (so simple :bang: )

It sounds like you might have the pattern selector set to an existing pattern. So when you record, it will only record for the length of that pattern and the event automation will appear in the playlist on that pattern. If it's a short, repeating pattern, the automation will also be short and repeating.

Just select an empty pattern. Then Press record, select "Notes and automation" and press play. The automation will be recorded as event data in the pattern you chose.

Yeah, it's a bit convoluted imho. The thing is IF you have that selected, then it automates EVERYTHING which can f... u up big time. Then if you forget to recheck it, you get nothing.
