OK...So there isn't anything like surround panning/imaging/whatever in the processing itself. Would be nice to have, but I know surround audio is bit of a niche...Sigh.

I'm afraid surround panner or something like that is not planned. But I actually think there's no need for that one. It might work pretty well on surround anyways.

Little tipp: use the code-tag in the forum with [ code ] like this:

Code: Select all

p[3cc[#b[fa];#fh(1;0.4);fl;b(0.8)[2a]]]
Lol, I didn't expect that. I'll use the code function next time.

Meldaproduction - ok then I'll keep it. I'll make another version with more dampening and if it sounds good I'll add it. Perhaps a 3rd version with more bass would be nice too. I'll give it a try.

For others making presets. You might want to experiment with this type of algorithm. I think it could really sound good for plate sounds. The density is high and it builds up quickly. The basic idea is circular combs in parallel. It wasn't as hard to tune as a thought and it was somewhat easy to find setting that weren't grainy. It is also a very tight reverb, so I imagine it will work well on percussive material. I might try to make a plate based on this myself, but I may not have time. If someone else is looking to make a plate reverb and doesn't know where to start please give this algo a try.

Hahahaha. That has to be the best algorithm so far.

Anyway, I added filters in and I now have 3 variations. You can listen here.

Dry-->Concrete(same as previous more or less)-->Wide wooden-->Hard Wood

Of course it is possible to dampen it more, but that is the base setting for them. Here is what the GUI looks like.

It looks different from the usual GUI, but hopefully that's ok. I might try adding 1 or 2 parameters to the late reflections to make the 2 sides even. As always feedback is appreciated.

Vojtech - I think I might have found a bug. When you use the XY pad and then move from the edit screen to the easy screen the value changes sometimes. It doesn't always happen, but when it does it of course screws up the positioning. Could you check it out to make sure it isn't just my computer or my preset.

Post

They all sound the same to me. I cant hear any real difference.

I can hear quite a big difference, but they are all more like wall cubicle than some wooden cabin with complex shape, but I like it anyway, it has a specific character. Chandler, please send it to me, and I'll check the XY pad problem when possible (please add some instructions about how to simulate it if possible).

Woo hoo!, First (?) use of an XY Pad.

@Vojtech - can you shift the values up a bit so that they do not clash with the Y-axis label?

I have not said much of anything here but I am also doing my best to make Vojtech proud. :) I am going to do what I can to get the XY working tonight for some 2D positioning. Going for a stage/concert feeling preset.

Post

Very well, good luck guys! Actually you won't be the first one, maybe I should design some template for these 2D positioning presets, so they are compatible with each other...hmmm... Anyways hopefully tomorrow there should be another beta, with some cool new features of course ;)

So will MTurboReverb be compatible for use inside MXXX when it's released? It's pretty boss on its own, but I'd love to use it in that context for some of the weird stuff I'm doing with it. I asked a while ago, but got no answer. It currently doesn't show up in the list inside MXXX.

It seems some other people are interested in 2D positioning, so I thought I'd post about it. I forgot to post about ERs in my last post and how I did the panning/distance.

Panning - of course it is easy to just use the pannorama to change things, but that isn't IMO the best or most realistic way. Human ears dsetect left/right position by loudness and delay times. Loudness is obviously panning. Delay times in this case can be done using ERs. As something moves to the right side of a room the ER length for the right reflections becomes shorter and the left reflections become longer. If you try this with even 1 left and right ER you'll hear the source start to move without even touching the panning knob. When you add panning and air absobtion the effect increases.

1st attempt - My 1st try(what I posted above) I used 2 ER sections and set ER1 and ER2 to mono. I panned one right and the other left and modulated the volumes to simulate panning. Then I used the deform parameter to adjust the delay lengths of the ERs. After that I went into the EQ section and set up 2 highshelves at the same frequency, but one effects only the left and visa versa. When the positioner is moved right the left shelf decreases in gain and the opposite when it is turned right. Finally I used ER4 for diffusion.

2nd attempt - Yesterday I decided to try a new approach. I chose a preset for ER1. The instead of making it mono and using ER 2, I just used ER4. I set ER4 for diffuser 1 and set it for 100%wet 0% pervious. Now I just move the Delay taps forwards and backwards to change the left/right lengths. This saves CPU and it allows you to use presets for the ERs which IMO sound better than the random stuff I made. The other stuff, panning, filters, etc is the same. Of course you still need to pan the dry source for a more dramatic effect.

Distance - For distance I adjusted 3 things, the ER/LR ratio, the highend and the stereo width. I set up a multi parameter that increased LRs, decreased the frequency of the 6db/oct low pass and narrowed the stereo width and the distance increased. This along with increasing the wet/dry ratio will make things sound more distant. Make sure you set the EQ to output so that the low pass will effect the dry signal too. If it only effects the wet signal the effect won't work as well. Yesterday I figured out that I could turn this on and off so I'm going to add it to my previous plugins. This option will allow people to use the preset as a positioner or as a normal reverb, without having to worry about messing with the dry signal.

Sorry for the long post, but hopefully this gives people some ideas on how to implement a 2D positioner. If you have any questions or comments, leave them below.

Post

That is a much more sophisticated approach to the panning that I implemented so far, I will go back to mine and work on it. :) The distance is actually the same method I used but I increased the stereo width as I went "back" in distance. The way I had it the sound became less localized the farther back I set the listening position. I also increased dampening on the LRs for lows as well as highs, but not as much. Tonight I will figure out that XY pad and we shall see how it all sounds on one control. Thanks for the tips Chandler!
