I just bought a new motherboard and more ram but am waiting on a power supply. The question is can I just put in the new motherboard and attach the HDDs and away I go or will I need to reinstall my OS.

Also I will get a new CPU in a few month when I can afford it. Will that require a new install as well.

Thanks

Ohhh, GOOD question. Is that Windows-XP? All I know is that with Windows-98 I never managed to just swap hardware. Also, some plugins and programs will stop working due to lame protection schemes. :(

Processor shouldn't be a problem, as long as it is the same brand and model. EG: Changes only the SPEED, from one AMD XP to another AMD XP. If you change from Intel to AMD, I'm pretty sure that you will need a reinstall. But let's hear from other members before anything else...

XP does better with the swap, I speak from experience here. You'll need to re-auth it with MS though. The CPU should be a piece of cake. BUT, sometimes cleaning house is better idea....

Thanks for the bad news guys. I have XP. I hate doing a new OS. I think I'll do for the MoBo but try to get away without it for the CPU.

I am going from an ASUS (A7VN266 or something similar no info at hand) to a Gigabyte GA-7VT600F with a gig of ram (ooh luxury).

CPU will be just upgrading from an AMD2000XP to whatever XP cpu they manage to get up to. Hopefully a 52000XP but more likely a 3200XP.

So does that sound like a safe bet or is it likely I will need to install when doing the CPU as well?

Thanks for the help as I would probably have just put in the MoBo and sat scratching my head for a while. Or punching the monitor wondering why XP won't fire up.

Ta heaps

Never change a running system. If you change the system, you should _really_ give it a whole run. _The_ rule with about any OS ;)

CPu swap should affect your install of the OS at all (unless you switched to a HT chip that is). The motherboard swap can affect it, and you'll see a TON of "Found New Hardware" messages on boot, if not through 2-3 boots.

I think it would be wise to reinstall if you are changing your motherboard. Just about every driver will be different - and remember it's not just the grfx card and sound card we're talking about - just look in the device manager to see just how many drivers your system needs - there's tons!!!! - could get messy.

You're absolutely right, but I personally have seen XP handle the change quite well a few times. Win95 didn't fare as well though. XP has gotten a lot better about cleaning up after itself than its previous bretheren.

8) i'm not so impressed with reinstalling an operating system, either. like, it's not my idea of a fun date. on the other hand, a freshhhh install is always so clean and fast that i think it ends up worth it, even trying to get new challenge response for my spark fxmachine plug and my bundled plugs that came with mbox and other little pains. man, what a pain.....but when it's done, it's soooo good.
i'd rather have a mullet than a comb-over.
fortunately, i have neither.

Reinstall!!! Every system needs a good cleanup now and then. I do a complete reinstall at least once a year. That has gotten a lot easier since I got Norton Ghost, though. Make a system backup with XP, basic apps and drivers. Make another with every thinkable application, VSTs, the works... in case something happens.

Uh Hum. Music software forum? I recommend you backup all your tracks and other software and reinstall from scratch! It never hurt's as you get a clean install and a clean disk to play with. The CPU shouldn't cause any problem.

Not wanting to sound obtuse but what do you mean. Are you saying if it aint broke don't fix like why bother upgrading or try using the old OS in case it works fine or...........

I have backed up my audio files, vstfolder, even my whole FLStudio folder and my docs etc but I have never used a program like Ghost. Are there any free ones that do a good job and how do they work. I realise it can't back up the whole C drive on a DVD so what does it back up?

If you install a different mobo you are asking for trouble if you don't reinstall... Alot of the time the OS won't even boot if you don't.

Changing just cpu speed = no reason whatsoever to reinstall.
