hi, can someone give me some really simple instructions re trying to work out what plugin might be crashing my Cubase 8.5?

I have an issue raised with Steinberg since 4th Jan but still no reply. I can't read the crash dumps to see if that helps.

I tried watching where the project crashes and it seems to be at different points in the load

If you are experiencing crashes upon launch, and the Blacklist log doesn't help you, you have no other solution than this:

1. Create a new folder called "VstPlugIns disabled"
2. Move ALL your plug-ins into it, leaving the VstPlugIns folder empty.
3. Now move just a few plug-ins each time and restart Cubase. I have basically ALL my plug-ins in sub-folder with vendor name, so, I move one folder at a time, when I have problems.
4. Every time Cubase launches without problems, you become certain those are good.
5. Repeat this until you add a folder and get a crash.
6. Look inside the sub-folder that was added before the crash, and remove all plug-ins but one.
7. Add the plug-ins removed from that sub-folder one by one until you get the crash again.
8. When you get it, you know which is the offending plug-in

This may be tedious, but is the only really safe scanning option, Any "validator" they include is just a waste of time, and rarely prevents problems. Many times, it is part of problem, and not part of the solution.

Do you have, by any chance, one, or more of the Waldorf plugins installed? They crashed to me due to a UAC issue, because they only installed the user folders in the MyDocuments folder of the installing user, not of all users. I actually brought the thing up to them twice, but, the latest version still has that problem.

hi, I thought the blacklist was new in Cubase 9? I'm on 8.5 - but I will try your method so thanks for that..

re Waldorf, I have PPG 3V 64bit - but previously it has been ok.

In Windows you can try the Event Viewer.

No, what's new is the Plug-In Manager. The Blacklist exists since a really longtime. Usually it is in:

C:\Users\*username*\AppData\Roaming\Steinberg\Cubase 8.5\Vst2xBlacklist Cubase.xml

You can open this file with Notepad or Wordpad (better Wordpad).

ok thanks I will look at that - I think I've found the folder where the issue is (I had a number unfortunately) and I'm adding plugins back in...

Good. Now you're almost done. Please tell which was the plug-in causing the crash. It's always good to know.

hi, needed to go off for a family meal.

It's Satin that is the issue. Odd I've had it for years and it's in almost all my projects and I last updated the Cubase back in Feb last year.

I'll contact U-he tomorrow - maybe they can help.

I had crashes with the VST3 version of RePro~1 in Cubase 8.5, while with the 2.4 version I have no problem at all.

Glad to know you have Cubase back now. I hope u-he can help you getting the problems caused by Satin sorted out.

Once again, this is a proof for what I have been saying over and over: those stupid "validators" that are causing the DAWs launching lasting eternities are basically useless. When there are serious problems they usually don't help, and many times they ARE the cause of problems. I wish vendors will get rid of these once and for all, or at leats give us, users, the possibility to simply turn them OFF.
