Plenty of fence sitters would have paid $299 to get Version 1 and a free upgrade to version 2 had they announced the release of the modular system and not also sent signals to the community that they were desperate for cash.
yessir. particularly the bit I edited for emphasis.

also, and this is not exactly scientific ... but check out the sweetwater.com DAW Software section. By default, the page should be arranged by 'most popular' from top to bottom. but if it isn't, set it to that (it's a drop-down box, in the top-left quadrant of the page). just look where bitwig is in this list.

I don't agree. Then again, what's new :hihi:

Nope. The white screen of death is not related to such comments and if you go to the ableton forum then you'll notice -with a few exceptions about plugs- that the issue is solved around 2009.... because it's a W7 issue............ I do not assume Ableton left their userbase with the WSOD bug exactly when announcing a new MAJOR version. Does the word MAJOR rings a bell for you? By the way... I didn't know you were a Bitwig fanboi :party:

PS I bet it's the same bug. Seems Bitwig team brought their work home.... :hihi:

Neither did I. :hyper:

Even tough I'm going to upgrade and see what the one year upgrade time brings, the technique they are using is the same as UAD. Make the plugin expensive in the first place and sell it later on sale on regular price.

@Aloysius

Lol, j/k
On the other hand, it's rather painful. Because I still like the idea behind Bitwig.

My point was that there used to be serious issues with Ableton Live, like (but not the same as) the one described above my post (hence the ^). The connection between the Live problems and Bitwig problems logically seems to me to be related to the staff who used to work for Ableton and now work for Bitwig (hence the :idea:).

Live was so bad at one point that I was ready to jump ship if Bitwig turned out to be a similar product to Live but without major bugs and problems.

@Aloysius

Thanks for the explanation! Think I'll save my money for Ableton and the AKAI MPC X. That will teach 'em!

@ritamissuri

Dom isn't a bad guy. I think he's under influence of some bad guy, though. Take a look at this....

Just give us 2.0 for free, we will pay next time, we promise! :hihi:

But on a serious note: since Bitwig was released, Ableton Live got some huge improvements real quick. I'm starting to think it's because the people that were holding back Ableton were gone and started Bitwig. This makes quite a lot of sense now.

My personal take on it's just a result of direct competition, with the two bits of software competing for pretty much an identical market it requires quick evolution or you're left behind ...

After my initial gloomy assessment, I will probably pay for the V2 upgrade - it seems a fair price for those features - but where to from there? I can see why people are nervous.

Bitwig need to be more imaginative in how they generate revenue and deal with competition. They could develop features/plugs for optional purchase, and extend into the hardware market. Abelton are killing them here with the convenience of almost ubiquitous plug-and-play compatibility. It's just less hassle ATM to get setup with Live. Now it would appear to be more financially attractive too.

Just an opinion, but Bitwig need to nurture their core of dedicated users and extend their business outwards, not just hope to milk a declining customer base. I personally don't mind paying a subscription, but for what? I don't want to be a beta tester, I want a stable system to record music with.

Question: Has Bitwig ever had a paid update yet? I only ask wondering (if not) where these legions of loyal users come from if (emphasis on the if since I don't know) nobody has never done anything but paid for it once.

I know people who've invested many thousands in Cubase over the years and are literally loyal users, not so sure about a product that hasn't even left the 1.x cycle yet.
