Live 4 - Midi pattern-start recording on first note played ?

Hi,
I just started using Live 4 and was wondering if the midi clips you make in a session slot can start recording after the first note played, instead of having to hit the play button on the session slot?
The manual doesn't seem to explain this, and it would really make my workflow alot smoother, as if its not smooth enough.
If I am trying to make a pattern I am already in the middle of the clip before I start playing. The first drum sound happens 3or4 steps into the clip then I have to stop recording and move all the midi notes together.
I have been setting the clip to record for around 40 bars, so I can pick the best take, then just setting the loop points to pick the best bit. Is this a common way of working in Live? or should I delete the excess midi notes and save file size?
Thanks,
jason

on a relateed issue, ableton does not aapper to support any sort of pre roll--which I prefer to 1st note. Currently am hitting play, burning a bar or two and then playing. Then I reset the start point. Not a big a deal, but a weird thing. At least there a metronome, Sonar fans.

why not record in arrange-view?borax wrote:I have been setting the clip to record for around 40 bars, so I can pick the best take, then just setting the loop points to pick the best bit. Is this a common way of working in Live? or should I delete the excess midi notes and save file size?
you can use 'punch' (in/out) then. or record while looping. it doesn't matter how long your recording will be. just double-click the new clip and pick the best take (see chapter 15.6.1 in the manual).
btw, a preroll/-count func is not necessary when recording in arrange-view. use 'punch' and start 1-xx bars before the punch-in location. make use of the metronome if needed.

It does give you a short count-in in session (when you hit the record slot), but it doesn't reset all other clips... I've noticed that you have to leave some space in front and behind in general, to accomodate decay, timing etc when recording audio. Recording in session or arrange gets a little confusing... In arrange for instance if you start in the middle of a punch-in, you have a bunch of overlapping clips to sort, and dpeneding on whiich clip you drag, the location indicated may be bar 21, although your moving it to the start of the song??? kinda weird... If you use count-in in session, it should start clips from a zero point...
