We have similar tastes for sure. I love you mentioned "Charlie" which was a fascinating book read to us when I was a kid (6th grade maybe)Bombadil wrote:Inception I threw in as my mind drew a blank. Still think it is a thought-provoking movie.
Upon further consideration, I'd exchange that for 'The Matrix' or 'Silent Running.' The latter is another of those movies I saw rather young that made a significant impact on me. Saw it as an adult, and it didn't do much for me. Maybe because I knew the ending.
Then there's 'Charlie,' based upon the short story 'Flowers For Algernon.' Went to see this on a Gr.8 class trip. Sad story about unintended consequences of medical 'progress.'
Colossus made an impression on me, as well. Interesting thing, it was based on a book, and the book had a sequel that has an interesting twist.
Still waiting for a proper version of 'Dune.' The 1984 movie more or less sucked, and the mini-series, well, they didn't have the budget for good actors or decent FX.

The favorite and classic, Star Wars: Return of Jedi (watching is as a kid helped). Classic contenders: Robocop, Blade Runner, Last Starfighter, maybe first Mad Max. Not yet classic winner: Hellboy (one may argue it's not a sci, but if Star Wars is, then so is Hellboy). Not yet classic contenders: Matrix (the first one, sequels were entertaining, but with no punch), Dark City, Undead (the Australian movie with UFO and zombies - definitely sci-fi), Chronicles of Riddick (somewhat dumb, but I liked it), Starship Troopers, Serenity, Equilibrium. Almost a sci favorite, Army of Darkness.
Some often mentioned favs, that I didn't like at all: Inception (so hip, it's over the hip), Alien (stunning visuals, but boring and predicable, still better than the last one, I quite liked the sequel, and AVP), 2001 (the mystical ending ruined it), Event Horizon (that starship not only have been to hell, but it must have been designed in hell, waking up astronauts by flushing then down on a steel grid gothic horror floor... seriously).

Yep. Maybe it is seen as boring and predictable nowadays, because everyone just blatantly copied stuff from it.incubus wrote:I always thought "Alien" was great because it wasn't boring and predictable.

I loved Alien when if first came out and still watch it on occasion. I haven't seen any of the sequels because I didn't want them to ruin the original for me.chk071 wrote:Yep. So great in any regard. Especially Giger's design is some of the best stuff i've ever seen in such a movie, still is.
When Alien came out I think Newsweek had the best quote about the movie. I believe they said, "It can scare the peanuts out of your m&m's." Classic.

IMO, you can safely pass on those. I watched Alien 2, and, i think, part 3, and was quite disapointed. One of those movies which is simply very hard to succeed.JJBiener wrote:I loved Alien when if first came out and still watch it on occasion. There have been some good movies mentioned here. For me Blade Runner is my favorite SciFi movie of all time. I like everything about it from the characters and plot, to the set design and costumes, to the soundtrack. Every aspect of that movie works for me. I have a slight preference for the Directors Cut over the Original, but I can watch it in any form. It also the most quotable SciFi movie ever. I have seen in whole or in part at least 75 times.
If we go back to the golden age of the 1950's, then my top two contenders are The Day The Earth Stood Still and Forbidden Planet. Both extremely well done for the time. For the 60s and 70s, I would include 2001: A Space Odyssey and Silent Running. 2001 is included because I loved sitting in the theater at 7 years old experiencing the light show at the end. Silent Running because Bruce Dern is so good at playing a psychotic.
In another comment, I mentioned Alien, so I won't repeat that here. An honorable mention has to go to 2010: Odyssey Two. I know it isn't a great movie and the physics are preposterous, but I will take any opportunity to see Helen Mirren speaking in a Russian accent. Whoo!
There are probably more I could mention, but that is all I can think of for now.

Fact is, I watched Alien rather recently, maybe I had some expectations, I don't know, I didn't quite find it scary at all. Maybe I'm afraid of different things and I'm not into movies for scares, maybe I shouldn't watch Spaceballs beforehand.... I quite liked Aliens (the sequel). I think I saw the 3 or Resurrection, or both, but they melted together in my mind, I remember those as watchable garbage. But Prometheus, that was the real disaster...
Talking about disappointing fiction, I was quite disappointed in Lord of the Rings series. I mean, it's a smooth watch, so much polished technically and also so soft and forgettable. It's too much a product for wide audience and too little a piece of art, really missing a smallest grain of madness. Shame, as the book is so big. And it pretty much killed any chance for another big budget adaptation.

"Aliens" was just awesome. I was just about 21 when it came out and me and a bunch of co-workers waited all night to get tickets and see it. I had to sit on the f... ing step floor
Was so awesome though, man seeing movies back in those days was incredible. Packed theaters with people cheering on good guys and jeering the bad guys. It was an event.
Now, it's just a bunch of spoiled rich-kids that have nothing better to do than text each other two seats down
