DAW with a "human" workflow?

I have noticed on many occasions that Mulab is not set up in an intuitive, conventional way by default. Right-clicking on a note bar for instance deletes it rather than opens a context menu.

This would drive crazy. Same also in FL Studio.
Why not give the right click more power with a
context menu like you said.

They are adding this stupid feature to Bitwig apparently, right click conventionally brings up choices, not deletes stuff

But that menu does not apply to the note. It's a general context menu.
In Mixcraft for instance when I right-click a note bar, this useful menu pops up:

And as you can see MC uses the standard Windows short keys known from Word etc.

I just don't like anything that reduces my options while at the same time increasing the possibility of errors. In BWS at the moment if I right click on a note I can not just delete it but also mute it, cut, copy and duplicate it - all useful things. I can also select it or all other notes and mute layers. How can I do those things if the default is to delete? It may speed up deleting but slow down everything else, plus make it easier to accidentally delete notes because I am pretty sure I will keep trying to rightclick to get options for some time after the change. I just hope they make that optional.

Yep, I have accidentally deleted many a note in Mulab. After decades of using Windows, right-clicking for context menu options is in my DNA

FL Studio would be killer if it had context menus and customizable shortcuts... it's the one thing i don't like about FL is there are always menu's to trawl through and shortcuts that only work in certain arrangements.. maybe v 12.5?

I could test only Cubase Artist 9 for now:

As I expected, you can use the arrow keys and other combinations to control the Editor. First, is when you right click on a note or empty space in the midi editor, you have the tools box only:

Now, if you press Ctrl + right click on a selected note(s) or empty space, you have this context menu:

So, there is no difference if you click on empty space or selected note(s). The difference becomes in the context menu when you select note(s) before Ctrl+right click.

Left click on a note just selects that note

I think we agree, kinda. A right-click in Logic brings up a ton of options, including tools. However, that menu can be triggered via keyboard shortcut, as are most of the functions contained within.

I guess the right-click contextual menu is 'expected' behaviour, going back many years, that perhaps younger producers have no real connection with. Either way, if I had to choose a tool to assign to the right-click, it wouldn't be 'delete'

I don't use keyboard shortcuts because I like to have at least one hand on my real keyboard to play notes so prefer the mouse to have the power where possible.

Now, to S1v3:

It is somehow similar to Cubase. You can move the notes by Alt+arrow keys. However, there is a slight difference in the right click/middle click.

Right clicking the a note is different from right clicking empty space in the editor:

The middle click brings the tool box:

Now, Cubase middle click is the hand tool (like in Acrobat Reader), so you can navigate inside the clip.

I still prefer Cubase! But, S1 comes very very near!

I just saw this thread...and thought "really"?

Now I feel your pain. There is always something that makes me want to dive out into the world and try something new. In the end it is just another lay.

Inevitably I come back to Cubase. Why? At its core it reminds me of hardware. And that is where I started (Otari Mkiii 8 track). With Cubase I can go simple or I can go all out. At no point do I feel like I am relying on the software to do me a favor. On the other hand, if I wanted or needed to I could lean on it.

I don't use many of the "big" features. Media bay bores me. I can just lay down my ideas raw. I can come back and play as I see fit.

Do I use other DAWs? Of course. Live, FL, and Maschine all serve a purpose, but none that ever feels human.

I doubt there is a stone left unturned in this thread. We all have an opinion. We all have workflow desires. Cubase is hardware. Cubase feels human.
