Did you take the plunge and get the World Suite? Thoughts on the library? I think I'm going to wait for a sale since I have no upgrade path with UVI.
[/quote]

Yes, I took advantage of the quite affordable upgrade price.
To be honest I was quite disappointed with "World Traditions", but the new World suite seems really well-constructed.
I have only startes scratching the surface of it (it's a 18 GB library) but most of the sounds in it are really playable and enjoable

Keyswitches offer different playing technique on almost all the sounds
There's a "Timbre" option (EQ?) whch can vary the sound quite drastically

I have checked many mmiddle eastern sounds, the accordion, some irish and I am quite impressed so far

It's a nice trick using the fact that it is sample based where you use samples from other key that you tune to get the right pitch. (use the D sample for the C note with a -2 semitones tuning)

Thanks for the input Autodafe. Mikelo suggested I look further into Tarilonte's Era II Medieval & Forest Kingdom II (Thx Mikelo!), and now, I'm on the fence again. Pretty strong combo, and currently, cheaper than UVI World Suite.

Also checked into Soundbytes, "Banchetto Musicale" 17th century period instruments library. While it seems exquisitely done for an older library and is very inexpensive, it doesn't seem to have legato patches or even scripting (although I could be wrong on this). The Kontakt patches could be "legatoized?" with WIPS/SIPS, and I may wind up buying this down the road. At $100, seems like a nice library for someone who doesn't mind taking the time to customize patches. http://www.banchetto-musicale.de/en/verzeich.htm

(Soundbytes also has an older Akai/Soundfont library titled, "Early Patches", which is the predecessor to "Banchetto Musicale". Might be of some interest to others at only around $60 http://soundbytes.de/EarlyPatches/en/verzeich.htm)

In the end, I may just go with Era II / FK II. Although not quite as extensive as World Suite, it will give a fairly broad palette with better than decent realism. If I could afford UVI's and Tarilonte's libraries, I would grab 'em all. Using Era II & FK II in the foreground and UVI's for backing tracks.

If anyone can recommend between World Suite versus the Era II Medieval + FK II combo, I'd sure appreciate any advice.

Cheers, and thanks again to everyone who's contributed to this thread!

thanks for soundbytes links

Versilian has some unique instruments in its VSCO2 library: http://vis.versilstudios.net/vsco-2.html
There's also a free community edition.

Why didn't I know about this before? LOL, where've I been? What a great resource! Thanks for the link, Musical Gym. I may pick this up for my son (who is a prodigy composer/songwriter). Already have Hollywood Orchestra and some VSL libs amongst others, but I may get it myself just for the oddball instruments included. The price is uh, more than reasonable.

I heard over on "hardware harlots", that the uilleann pipes, sitar, and duduk patches in World Suite sounded quite authentic with a good number of articulations between them. I read the post too late and took the plunge on Era II Medieval Legends and Forest Kingdom II...and since I have no willpower, I picked up Cantus and Mystica while I was at it.

I'm still satisfied with my decision and I guess I'll just need to wait a bit and get World Suite later :)

Thx to everyone who shared their time in this thread!

Mystica can be a lot of fun to play in unusual ways; if you vary the sample start times of phrases and play on your keyboard as though you were improvising a melody, you can get quite unexpected and good sounding results.

Just a note on VSCO2 Pro. Sam added 5 baroque recorders and 4 wooden flutes in a recent update. From my perspective these and other exotic instruments really add value to the pack. I think they sound quite nice as far as tone and seem to be fairly heavily sampled with round robins and the like. The only negative to me is some volume inconsistencies.

Disclaimer. While I paid for VSCO2 and can say whatever I please, I do work with the VSCO2 community samples on my own little instruments.

You can find an in-depth review of World Suite here:

Thanks for review and for listing what is not included in it. I liked the last tidbit at the end:

"I think we’re now ready to go beyond those trite categories of “World Music” or “Crossover Music,” and with resources like this, really begin to make a music which derives from the traditions of the whole Earth, while remaining true to the visions of each one of us, from our own particular cultures."

UVI has sales, so I would hesitate to pay full price. UVI Synsations, which they sell for $199 has been given away for free in the past.
If you search jrrshop.com, they often have good deals; you can use coupon code FORUM or GROUP to get further discounts and also visit their Blowout section/site to sometimes get even lower prices on the same product.

You may find that developers who concentrate on single instruments rather than packages have more authentic sounding offerings.
what's the difference between World Traditions and World Suite, as in is it worth paying $200 more for Suite?

So I just saw World Suite today, and it looks impressive. I'm going to start composing for my first video game this year, and hope to have the game done within 2 years (I'm doing everything...music, coding, modeling, etc). I hope that by making my own game and showing off my skills (mostly in music) that I can use that to get freelance work/a job in game music composing. I'm going to have a wide variety of ethnic music in my game, and I've been wondering if I should get a library/ies of "world music" instruments. But I already have quite a few things to work with:

Logic Pro 9 (upgrading to X this year)
Kontakt 5
Korg M1 Legacy
A ridiculous amount of free samples from various (legal) sources (which is mostly for electronic music, but I'm sure there's something "world" related in there)
(Other things that I can't think of off the top of my head)

So with all that I've listed, do I even need to buy anything else? I'd probably get Traditions or Suite at some point, but I'm on a super small budget, so I have to really pick and choose what I get.

Post

I can't make comparison between Traditions and Suite as I don't own Suite and haven't used Traditions much.
Since UVI doesn't sell Traditions directly any longer, I think the best parts of it are included in Suite.
I may pick up Suite later when it goes on sale, especially if they revive the discount for Traditions users.
I don't really need it at retail price.

What's the best price anyone has seen on UVI World Suite?
Everywhere I look it seems to be $299
My main tools: Kontakt, Omnisphere, Samplemodeling + Audio Modeling. Unify = godsend. Tari's libraries also rock.

I would be interested in comments from anyone who has compared this to Ethno World 6 and RA. I like UVI somewhat, their synth stuff is great. But their Orchestral Suite was lacking in a large way. So any thoughts?

I saw this posted by UVI on VI-control.
Thought it might be interesting to some people.
