OK, tomorrow it's February again, and for those of us who need external incentives to get off our arses and make something, there's:

http://fawm.org/

Anyone here signed up or planning to join in?

I'll be doing it.

Great! I always appreciate your stuff. Are you collaborating with someone or going it alone? For me personally the concept is only a motivating factor. I don't want to get involved in a collaboration unless I know I will have the time to make a real contribution. I see some people ask for small contributions like a little backing vocals here or a guitar solo there...

I'll be attempting this. Never got to 14 though in the past. Best was 12 I think.

Divide two tracks into part 1 and part 2, and you're there.

I'm going to cheat using old lyrics and chord progressions that have been lying around. Even then I doubt I'll be able to make more than an EP, but I'll try.

I wish I could do this, but I'd be lucky to get one song finished!

I've done this one and NaSoAlMo a few times in the past. I finished/"won" each time (and did double the NaSoAlMo goal a couple of times). But each time I would start without really being in the habit, work frantically for a month feeling like it was a difficult burden, and then go for months without doing much.

What worked better for me was committing to making at least one track a week for a year -- it started as kind of a chore but turned into an easy, sustained flow by the end. This January I finished 22 tracks (and might make it 23 tonight).

[edit: yup, 23 :phones:]

Thanks for the reminder!

Dunno if I can commit this year (already working on an album for November release), but FAWM 2006 is what caused me to actually become a songwriter after more than 20 years of wanting to.

Thanks. I hope to do a collaboration or two, but mostly I'll be going it alone.

Some interesting perspectives there. Personally I'm (hopefully) leaving behind a long period of not being able to do anything creative for many reasons (mainly job&kids), and would like to get more into music making. Sadly, my efforts at getting better at this have been too sporadic to give results, so I feel the need to do something drastic. Having had the experience of getting a lot better at chess by playing a huge amount of low quality, very fast games, I thought something similar would work for music. Threshold just about level with the ground, anything goes, quantity above quality. It's a first step. Ultimately, establishing a habit like you've done is probably the way to go, though. 23! Yay!
