i'm a Mac user but not in the studio...

i have a Powerbook G4 1.25Ghz as an everyday workstation but in the studio i run Win XP. my setup is:

-Compaq EVO P4 2.4 1GB
-SCSI 10Krpm for system and huge IDE drives for recording and storage.

and my interface is a MOTU 828mk2

so far i'm quite satisfied with the capabilities of it but as an everday Mac user i'd love to make music on a Mac.

i've tried on the G4 Powerbook, but even at 1,25Ghz and 512GB, it's an absolute PIG for music. i tried Reason and Peak for the most basic tasks and with both i have time to make dinner, watch a bad movie, get depressed and hang myself before anything is done. i really don't know how some of you can put up with such a slow response when feeling creative. it just kills it for me.

for my real music work i use Cubase SX, Kontakt, Battery, Arturia Moog Mdular and Lounge Lizard. and as effects it's Sonalksis and Waves mostly.

so thought, a G5 could do the trick. and my question is this...

will a G5 2.5, being 64bit, with 2GB of RAM and better than my current P4 2.4? (and please no quoting benchmark tests, they're not worth SHITE!) and will it be at least twice as fast as my G4?

i have actually reserved the first G5 2.5 to be delivered to my local shop but i want feedback from musicians or studio engineers before making my final decision, i plan on using the same setup(CSX, NI, Arturia, LL and the MOTU i/o). you guys have helped me in the past and i value your opinion and experience very much.

TIA.

really? Have a look at osxaudio.com forums for the name "putte", and you´ll find that i am one of the heaviest "crtitisisers" of apple, and emagic as well.
I am in no way the "macs rule" dude, even less since i am on osX. :?

but the 2 questions you asked simply get the "yes" as an answer. ;)

my 1,25dualie g4 is still a powerful computer, but i would never ever want to work again with a single g4-computer.

But even with slower computers one can do a lot .. look at donkey tugger, or at all my years with the g4 400 ( i did my first cinema-score for a film with this computer alone, and i am not known for minimal-music only needing a few tracks and a few plugs .. :hihi: ..)

I´ll go for the 2,5 dualie this year .. and from the g5-user reports you see that the vast majority of g5 owners are really happy with their machines.
The ibm-chip, the bus-architecture .. etc .. one can like apple or not, but the g5´s are just topmodern computers being very fast.

cubase sx2 is not optimized for G5.

I do have g5 2 x2 with 2.5gb ram.

it is really fast, much better than my old pentium4 1.6ghz PC but
logic much better when it comes to CPU usage than
cubase SX2.

but still I like to use cubase in OSX. :D

i have a single g5 and get by just fine running reason with sx. I routinely load up Kontakt, 5-6 other vst instrument instruments, and plenty of effects in addition to what i have going with reason. you'll have no problem at all.

I'd suggest running both at the same time, if you can. I do, and between the two, have the best of both worlds. But I really love my G5, and I made my PC, so she's also very special to me.

I don't think you can ge wrong with the G5 though. It rocks, big time...

i actually have two XP machines in the studio. the second one is a smaller Compaq EVO P4 1.5Ghz that is a dedicated Kontakt sampler and gets recorded by CSX on the other (which the G5 will handle when it comes).

i plan on turning the P4 2.4 into the Kontakt machine and the 1.5 into a casual Battery/Reason machine.

no use getting rid of them, they have no market value but plenty of power when dedicated.
