When I try to defrag my Win ME system disk, it constantly re-starts with a message that another program is writing on the disk, although I have closed all background tasks before. Any ideas what this could be?

Does there exist a 3rd party defrag tool which avoids this problem?

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Hi,

Virus-checkers are prime suspects for this sort of thing ... or, and this had me scratching my head until I finally realised, a screensaver or power-saving features.

What is the exact,word for word,message it gives you.

Most third party defraggers will work around this(I'm a Diskeeper user myself).
I'd guess right off the top of my head that you're allowing indexing in your drive properties,and you could disable indexing.The third party defragger is still your best solution IMO.

I`m running XP...but I have the system drive checked for indexing,but have no defrag probs.Maybe ME is different.

Give us the exact error message.

I've seen that message a million times since Windows 95 came out. Want to REALLY make sure everything is shut down? Get Process Explorer from http://www.sysinternals.com It's free, and it'll show you EVERY thread running on your system, and you can kill them if you like with it as well.

If it's the message I'm thinking of, it's not an error message. It's just letting you know that there is a process running in the background that is writing to disk making the defragmenter rescan to see if any files have been moved. If it does it ten times it will prompt you and ask if you wish to continue. Click the box that says never to prompt again.

All disabled. The only task which is running is Explorer.

Yes, that´s exactly right.

Alot of the times its windows itself changing the drive. It is doing the memory swap thing...at least that was my experience. If you just keep hitting ok eventually it will ask you if you want to see future warnings...just click no...after a bit it will pick up speed as everything finished swapping out and all should be fine

Even after 1 hour running there was no progress in defrag status.

Hi,

You may want to check out the official Microsoft response (regarding toolbar behaviour mostly) to this if you haven't already:

Another thing to try is running in Safe Mode. If this doesn't work then maybe a ScanDsk as well, just to check the disc for errors.

Also, check that you have unplugged any USB stuff as drivers for modems and ADSL routers can cause the disc contents to be altered.

In Safe Mode it works, but that´s uncomfortable.
I´ve connected an ADSL router via USB. This could be the cause.

I tend to agree with Deadmeat.
I believe scandisk is your prob...not your defrag program.

Diskeeper lite works without problems and is very fast. Thanks for the tip, ew. Problem solved.
