Okay, I gotta ask how you guys get that "squidgy, fizzy" sound @ 3:05? Love the way it sounds & I hear it used quite quite a bit in psy.
Ahh the short squelchy bit in the break? It's a saw wave + a resonant band pass filter. LFO on the oscillator pitch and the same LFO on the filter cutoff - sometimes inverted so the osc pitch ascends while the cutoff descends, or visa-versa.

We made that one in Serum - and there was probably a noise oscillator going through the filter as well, and probably a bit of unison :)
Cool, thanks.... That's seems simple enough.... Don't own serum but I'm sure just about any synth would be capable :tu:

Hi all, I am quite new when it comes to psytrance, just discovered it via the Ektoplazm site which has some wonderful stuff. Can yout tell me some great artists that sound dark, but with strong melodic elements? Thank you in advance!

Post

Sonic Elysium (the album "Machaon"), U-Recken (basically everything)

That looks perfect for me actually... is that a default skin or have you customized it?

Try Digicult :)

And any Goa Trance to be honest. A lot of it is very melodic and tends to be in minor keys. Goa got me into electronic dance music in general when I was a moody teenage goth because of those dark sounding melodies - particularly Astral Projection's early albums.

Digicult makes awesome melodic stuff but I wouldn't call it dark at all, it's mostly the opposite, very euphoric music.

Btw, if you will search for "dark psytrance", be prepared that most of it doesn't have anything resembling a melody at all.

I dunno - bits and bobs have that darker edge, in a similar way to U-Recken...

+1.

You have been warned :hihi:

But yeah, I think terms like "dark", "euphoric" etc. are always open to interpretation from the listener. One person's "euphoric" is another person's "cheesy" for example :)

And when these two work together :hail:

One of my favorite psytrance tracks ever if not the most favorite.

I'm usually the first one of these two guys :)

Futuristic -> presets -> darkstar midnight -> first preset.

I have another one customized which is pretty much similar but with brighter blues.

Glad you like them! :)

It's worth noting that psytrance labels often have a particular style. Digicult release a lot of music with Dacru Records for example - who specialise in melodic psytrance. If you find an artist that you like who works closely with a particular label, there's a good chance you'll enjoy other artists on that label too.
