Sample :D

"Record directly into HALion from any internal or external source and have your samples cut, mapped and ready to play in no time with the new live-sampling editor."

edit:what a pointless process. Out of the 28GB download it only actually needed to install an extra 570MB over Halion 5.
You sure that those 570 MB aren't just the plugin itself? Like aMUSEd, i would have thought Halion 6 features quite a lot of additional sample content.
On the white Steinberg installation screen where it shows you what it's about to install and what is currently installed, it had little tick boxes near everything because of Halion 5 and the total of what was actually being installed was as I've previously stated around 570MB. If that means that it's using the unzipped location files or whatever is unclear.

Edit 2: Halion 5 is 12GB, Halion 6 is 28GB so it must be using the unzipped location files and not installing them.

I'm going to uninstall H5 and H6 and do a fresh install now as I don't want to have all the content on my SSD drive twice.

Also after 10 minutes of playing around... The new Anima wavetable synth isn't anything spectacular and the new Skylab granluar synth is confusing me as I can't see any glaring obvious differences between it and Padshop pro and Auron? It plays straight samples but on the click of a button and it changes to a granular synth with the same functionality as the two other steinberg granular synths. As I've said though, it's only a quick 10 minute first impressions. I may have missed something.

The new Studiostrings are nice. I don't need any more piano or brass sounds though and I doubt I'll ever use them.

Apparently, it installs on top. It updates the HALion 5 content, and adds the HALion 6 specific content (at least, that's what the installer is reporting now).

And installation was concluded, and HALion 6 opened in Windows 7 without any questions. Now, it's time to check the content, and perform some tests, and then firing some DAW hosts and see how it behaves there.

But for now, it installed, and the standalone opened without any questions. Windows 7 x64.

Regarding user presets, AFAIK they don't go into the main VST Content (where are the "vstsound" files), do they?
thanks a lot for keeping us win 7 user updated, fmr, much appreciated ...

That's nothing, Kontakt ships with 40GB+
And is it available on disks or USB pens as well? Many people can't download such huge stuff...

For those who can't download such a big file, you can buy this in a box.

I wonder if with the release of Halion 6, we will see more frequent releases from Steinberg and 3rd party sample developers as far as new sample libraries for Halion 6 ?

Obviously, This was not the case with Halion 5.

What do you think about this ?

Post

Good question. Kontakt seems more of a "industry standard" for sure. Maybe Halion 6 will indeed become more popular.

Does Halion 6 include Halion Sonic 3 for free ?

Does Kontakt have a VA engine, and granular synthesis?
Can Kontakt re-synthesize/wavetable-ize samples and create/use wavetable?

Post

This is like a game of synth trumps :D

And following up on that question - I've been looking at HALion and I'm having a hard time differentiating what HALion provides and what Sonic provides.
I can't just demo them since I don't have a USB e-licenser and I'm not willing to buy one just to take this software for a spin.

Is it that HALion is geared towards sound design and synthesis and Sonic is more of a rompler/sample player?

Pretty much, at least the way I look at it.

That is nice, but I hope you don't have to give up the license you are cross-grading from?

"HALion 6 Crossgrade Proof of eligibilty required"
In what reality could one company make you forfeit the license of another company? This is in no way remotely possible and no company would ever ask that of someone.

OK. I checked the Steinberg Forum, and found out that Halion 6 includes Halion Sonic 3 !

Quote from Steinberg's Senior Marketing manager , Matthias Quellmann, at their forums :

"Yes, HALion Sonic 3 and all the new instrument libraries are included in HALion 6."

If you own Halion 5, you can upgrade to Halion 6 for $99.99 and you also get Halion Sonic 3 ! I think it's a very good deal. I purchased the upgrade from Halion 5 to Halion 6 already. :)

Hope this is helpful info.

I am thinking about the offers like used to be back in the day:

"Trade in your old computer, and get our new model for $100 off"

I mean, why should Steinberg want to lose $100 selling me Halion 6 because I own Kontakt? What is in it for them?

It can't be Native Instruments that refunds them the crossgrade loss.
