U should really checkout the bach coral, fastest way to do some Daft-punk-ish stuff
I know the chord generation stuff is actually very good, but I'm not looking for Daft-punk-ish stuff, and I enjoy the hell out of coming up with my own chords, then voicings of those chords. :)

For others, I think the chord stuff would be a godsend and a big help in getting inspiration.

Love recording the MIDI out from Cthulhu into my DAW (Reaper) Can't find any mention of this in the Cthulhu guide but do an internet search and you will find info.

Knowing a bit about music theory helps when using stuff like this too.
why?

Because you don't have to do too many trial and errors then. Especially when you use the presets with keys and would like to switch to another key in a song ;)

But nevertheless, if you take your time to find the right chords, it's an absolutely great tool. Love it!

This is a fantastically inspirational tool :tu: Like most things the innovation comes with how one abtracts it's initial purpose. Oblique Strategies I believe Eno once said. You can create your own chord templates or abuse the existing ones... Amongst other things I've done with some of the existing chord sets are some fake jazz stuff as well as poppy electro. It's been great for freeing my mind as I get trapped in my own sense of harmony and having a load of different chords mapped across the keyboard and not knowing what they are allows me to surprise myself.
All those who say learn theory are missing the point - as far as I'm concerned - cos the end result is more important than how you get there and to be honest most of the theoretically adept musicians I know aren't that innovative as they tend to inherently follow the rules... fields that have beem plowed a million times. My 2 cents
Haven't touched the arpeggiator yet though.

Hi gents,
I'm using Cubase 7 and there's no way I can connect Cthulhu with any VSTi : I do not seem to find in the Inspector the relevent ins and outs.
What exactly am I supposed to find or do to connect these 2 in Cubase ?
Thanx for any help !

Post

I never used CuBase7 but in 8 and 9 it works as follows:

1/ one instrument track, Cthulhu and routed: in - keyboard / out - cthulhu
2/ one instrument track, your instrument and routed: in - cthulhu / out - instrument
3/ activate both tracks

I use it regularly. It's handy as can be.

Cthulhu is the best arp, pattern generator, chord shortcut, all in one... also try automating the pattern selector with LFO modulation.. that's always fun. Another trip is to use the Hz mode.. you can then modulate the arp speed in Hz upwards, the arp that speeds up while the chord progression stays in time.

Also grab AD Axon while you are there, wonderful pattern generator. Set your DAW tempo to 128 bpm, and 96 bpm on Axon vst internally, and then you can set it to relative whole number relationships, and watch it come alive in new ways. 128 - (128 / 4) = 96, or 128 + 32 = 160, etc.

You're welcome. :)

Thanx ErikH (my 1st name's too Erik btw  ) I'll try that but I'm not very confident.May be i'm looking at the wrong place, I mean for the routing. (Oh, and there's no track activation in the 7 but it doesn't matter)

I was perhaps a bit short...
What you do is tell Cubase to send the keyboard input to Cthulhu and send Cthulhu's output (for example its arpeggios) to your chosen vst input instead of said vst getting its data from your keyboard.

1/ New Track > Instrument Track > Cthulhu
At the left-hand side, in the Inspector you see a number of settings, amongst which 2 icons with an arrow. These indicate In: all Midi inputs, and Out: Cthulhu

I personally prefer toset Midi In to my keyboard (dropdown list)

2/ add a second track:

New Track > Instrument Track > YourChosenVST, and give it a sound you like or use a preset. Test its sound.
Here, initially, the input and outputs are the same as above. What you do is tell Cubase to get its input here from Cthulhu. You can select Cthulhu Midi Out from the dropdown list. The output is YourChosenVST.

3/ Use shift-click to activate both tracks . Both are now highlighted.
Make shure both are Monitored so you can hear something.

In Cthulhu, aside the letters going up to L (if I remember correctly) you can chose an arpeggio. Chose one and press a not on your keyboard. You should get your chosen VST with your chosen sound playing arpeggios.

Don't hesitate to ask if something is still badly explained. I am not a teacher/specialist.

Good luck, Erik!

Yes! Just trying the demo :tu:

Would somebody be kind enough to email me the manual?

It’s only available to registered users which is insane. How can I demo properly if I don’t know what I’m doing. It’s impossible to work anything out in the ridiculous 20min demo window.
