Cubase or StudioOne?

For me, if Studio One had note expression or some other MPE type implementation and had chord track type functionality, I would never use Cubase. I think if you are just starting out with a DAW, Studio one is much more intuitive. But, I want MPE and chord tracks so I use Cubase instead. Just my personal thing.

So you played both hosts simultaneously and they responded exactly the same? That's interesting.
What kind of MIDI Device ports is the Blofeld using (Direct Music or Windows MIDI)

I see you also have Retrologue 2. Could you run this simple test for me?
Here is a zip with a Cubase CPR and a Studio One song.
Simultaneous_triggering_Retrologue2_in_Cubase_(left)_vs_Studio_One_(right).zip.
Both contain the same instance of Retrologue 2, but both panned hard to a different side.
Now open both Cubase and Studio One at the same time, arm both the Retrologue track and play a few C1 notes. Record the audio result in real time.

I included my result (128 samples - 44.1kHz): Result_simultaneous_triggering_of_C1_Note_Retrologue2_in_Cubase_(left)_vs_Studio_One_(right).wav
As you can hear my result sounds super stereo, wil in fact it should sound closer to mono with an occasional stereo'ish trigger.

Thanks.
No, sorry! I didn't run them at the same time! I tried, but I had an error message from Studio One about ReWire thing! Anyway, in real world why I should run Cubase and S1 at the same time? I can understand Live or Reason or even FL Studio running in ReWire slave to other hosts, but I don't find it useful to run Cubase and S1 at the same time.

Anyway, I'll try your method just to see, but I think I read somewhere that the latency normally increases when you run two hosts.

By the way, are you on Mac? Because I know running more than host in Mac has no problem at all.

I'll let you know the result of your project (if I can run it).
I tried to run the projects with Cubase and S1. They are opened but with errors. Cubase in the start, it warns about ADAT missing ports. It is OK, I know it is your setup, Anyway, it opens Retrologue 2 with the left channel, but no sound is coming from it!

Studio One is worst, as it refuses to load the Midi keyboard (Blofeld in this case). So, sorry I can't perform your test project with Cubase and S1 in the same time.

Do you have a latency when you open just one host (Studio One)?
You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.
Using: Cubase Pro 15, Bitwig 5, Tascam US-4x4HR, MODX6, DM12D, LaunchKey 49, Yamaha guitar(Pacifica 612v) and bass (BB234) and some virtual instruments and synths.

Some of that may (or may not) be the "show emulated ports" midi option. Something to try anyway, or it could be that the devices can't be shared by two applications if your're trying to use two daws at once.

1. Demo both of them on your specific system.
2. Make up your own mind how they function and operate on your setup.
3. Purchase the one that fits your work flow and runs on your configuration.

You can temporarily disable the Rewire support in Studio One > Options > Advanced > Services > I'll be careful, I promise!.

To confirm or deny additional latency when playing a VST Instrument. :)

I never experienced that. I often have Audition or Wavelab open when working in Cubase and it does not affect Cubase's latency. But if it is actually true, it would be nice know which host will be affected (both, first, second, last etc.).

No Windows 7, but my RME supports Multi Client Mixing.

Probably because I've not output set in VST Connections (I use control room outputs)

That's a shame. But thanks for trying!

Yes, when doing the thorough test across five hosts (viewtopic.php?p=6687749#p6687749), I used them one by one.

Hopefully when Studio One Pro 4 is released, it Will be much easier to choose between Cubase Pro 9 and Studio One Pro 4

What's the point of that?

Yes, I read it. Well, for me under 10 ms is OK, bearable. But, ideally should be under 5 ms.

The thing is (not defending S1 or any host) this situation is only important if you play live. For recording, (especially VSTi), I believe however good player you are, you still need to adjust some midi notes here and there.

I don't know really, for me (and many I believe), the latency you reported is not a show stopper. It is not that bad, is it?

To provide a simple test for those who don't want/need to do a test on sample level, but do want to share their result.

No it's not a showstopper. I just think Studio One could be a little better.

They have some kind of keep in key thing. I started to play with it a bit today. This is the first time I've really run S1. It is a little different but so much easier to use than Cubase. Cubase runs very inconsistently for me. And it always wants to set up busses instead of direct inputs and outputs. Which is weird because when you go to device setup, it shows direct ins and outs. The manual is also confusing because it uses different terms than other DAWs for things.

But Cubase has chord track. It is the reason I bought it. For someone who can't play an instrument but understands basic theory, it can be a lifesaver. If S1 got a chord track? I would dump Cubase so fast.

i recently got Liquid Music. It has a lot of the chord track functionality and might work as a chord track replacement. I've played with it a bit. You can drag and drop the midi after you get it the way you want it - it stays in key and you can set the chords at the top like the chord track. I think if it is set up right, you can just leave the chords at the top and do each midi part. I need to work with it some more.

No, I haven't heard anything about it, but it will surely be released sooner or later, and when it is, I have a feeling it will be very attractive to many Cubase users.

Squirrel please, it won't be a real battle until cubase 10 comes out to compete with S1 V5 ;)

I own and use both...

Both are fantastic
Both are horrible

I also own different guitars and synths for the same reason. DAWS are engineered to be different - hence this 7 page discussion.
