ImpOSCar2 Is Actually Here (Mac And PC), No Really, It Is

Sound is pretty good indeed, but logarithmic envelope shapes are something i never could get along with.
(This synth could really use fully adjustable slopes like for instance Albino3 has.)
BTW, the OSCar wasnt an analog. It was actually a hybrid with digital oscs and an analog filter behind them.

Stupid question, but aren't logarithmic envelopes just that? I mean, adjustable slopes. Opposed to linear, or exponential envelopes.ENV1 wrote:Sound is pretty good indeed, but logarithmic envelope shapes are something i never could get along with.

Well, i always understood it like this:chk071 wrote:Stupid question, but aren't logarithmic envelopes just that? I mean, adjustable slopes. Opposed to linear, or exponential envelopes.ENV1 wrote:Sound is pretty good indeed, but logarithmic envelope shapes are something i never could get along with.

Exponential: Curve bends inwards
Logarithmic: Curve bends outwards
So if you make a Bass on a log slope, the envelope amplitude falls very slowly at the beginning and then very fast towards the end. (Which of course sucks because you have that long period during which the filter remains practically open, thereby killing the snappyness of your Bass.) An exp slope on the other hand behaves exactly the other way around, i.e. the amplitude is falling fast at the beginning and then it gets slower as it approaches the end, which is good, because it makes Basses sound snappy.
Thats why i never got along with log envs.

Yeah, i know what you mean. If the synth allows it, i use exponential envelope shapes for the filter envelope for bass sounds too.
Looks like the synth world isn't too clear about exponential/logarithmic envelopes BTW. I just Googled, and, on some sites, it is described like you described, that one shape is concave, the other convex, others describe logarithmic envelopes as just a different slope compared to exponential envelopes. From what i know, an exponential rise is a set slope (exponential growth and stuff), while logarithmic slopes can vary. I'm neither good at maths (or remember any of that from school...), nor do i really know what both means exactly in this case, just my impression.

Yeah, the whole thing is not very clear.
Anyrate, heres what i mean in pictorial form. Its probably how most people would interpret it these days.

That would be a completely wrong way to use the word logarithmic. The most scientifically precise words would be concave and convex.

+1. My major is math, I can confirm it.HunterKiller wrote:That would be a completely wrong way to use the word logarithmic. The most scientifically precise words would be concave and convex.

There was 7 seven years between v1 and v2 of ImpOSCar
Meaning that a v3 could be due in late 2017, or 2018
Possible?

GForce aren't really like other developers who might constantly tweak their synth or add features here and there. They make it, make sure it's as big free as possible and then leave it alone. They have different devs for different products so it seems like they contract one for a given synth and then one day might decide a v2 is in order. I really doubt there would be a v3 of oddity or imp but who knows. I think they would have a hard time finding features to add that would fit the design philosophies. It would certainly be nice if they added all the modern bells and whistles like a tag based browser, scalable GUI, MPE support, locking parameters etc.

Nowadays I was thinking on selling my IMPoscar2 but had to realize it's so unique that selling would be silly,
The filter, the arp, the playing modes, the poliphony ... altogether is just as inspirating like brand new synths from other developers.
Gforce should improve their other synths with better GUI, preset browser, etc...
Imho if you're a developer and have one super synth like Imposcar, you should extend it and make it more and more deep.
