Recording Samples In Sonar Producer X

Hi, I've been excited about getting into sampling and have TX16Wx Pro which I'm using in Sonar X (Windows 32 bit XP). I just assumed I could record samples rather than importing them, but getting no input signal into the sampler AND if I drag samples into the sampler they don't play back if I hit the play button in the TX. I've noticed there is an upgrade. Does anyone know if this addresses the problem? Also, is there a stand alone version of the TX available? I would like to sample without opening a host in order to work faster. Thanks
