A guy at work turned me on to Tortoise today (that's a lot of T's). Anyway, they appealed to me a lot.pacoz wrote:Here's a few of mine:

Generally, when I like a concept album, it is in spite of the concept, not because of it. That said, I will note that I am quite fond of The Who Sell Out and the albums of Genesis, Camel and Gentle Giant mentioned earlier. Also the Mothers of Invention's We're Only in It for the Money.
Some concept albums would have been better without the concept. For example, the music on Spastic Ink's Ink Compatible is terrific, but the album is partly spoiled by inept lyrics and wretched vocals.

When I saw The Cure on the Blood Flowers tour they played almost every song from Disintegration. I never thought I would ever get to hear Prayers for Rain live. Maybe I am remembering how those last 4 songs kinda of tie themselves together, since they were the side B of the cassette....sickle666 wrote:This is one of my all time fav albums, but how do you reckon it's a concept aside from every track bieng brilliant?pacoz wrote: Disintegration - The Cure

Ok, forgot Three friends. But In a Glass House?duncanparsons wrote:I'm surprised Gentle Giant haven't had a mention...
I would go for:
Gentle Giant: In a Glass House; The Power and The Glory; Three Friends
The Power and the Glory had related themes in the songs, but a concept album?
I love GG btw.

IAGH was about prison, runaways, fugitives, etc. There wasn't a story, but like TPATG, it always struck me as a concept LP, that's why I put Crime Of The Century as well - not strictly concept, but has been sufficiently accepted as one over the years to warrant inclusion.Linde wrote:Ok, forgot Three friends. I'm surprised, too, that no-one has mentioned Journey to the Centre of the Earth or Myths and Legends of King Arthur... hang on, no I'm not!

downward spiral is really a concept album as it describes the toughts of one (sick and depressed) man.Sleek Month wrote:How is the downward spiral a concept album?
If the concept is being-depressing-and-shoving-your-head-up-your-ass, then all NIN is about the same concept.
Badfully i'm not able to explain the concept better than that in english
Btw the downward spiral is not only a concept album, this is also one of the greatest albums of all time
And it's surprising that nobody quotes "tommy" from the who (or maybe I missed it) ?

well if Husker Du's 'Zen Arcade' qualifies
I'd have to nominate the precursor
The Minutemen's 'Double Nickels on the Dime'
still as fresh as ever, if punk funk can be fresh

I compleatly forget about WotW, I loved that album way back when. My favourite tracks were Forever Autumn and Thunder Child with that tumbling 7/4 verse.bastien wrote:Another vote for War Of The Worlds. Admittedly the David Essex bits are a pain, but my word, that bass guitar when the alien chap first appears...
