Softube Modular

For me Softube Modular is more or less unusable. Latest version installed. With only one instance of Modular ("Pads Inverse Poly" preset) loaded in Studio One, and not even playing any notes, Studio One maxes out and one of my 6 cores is at 90 %. The average is 20 %.
Having an i7-4930K 6 cores @ 3.5 GHz and 64 GB of DDR3 RAM this is pretty annoying. I know Studio One is among the poorest DAWs out there when it comes to utilizing multicore, but I'm having performance problems even in Reaper with Modular. Maybe not as much as with Studio One, but playing is not an option there either.
My audio interface I'm using today is a Roland QUAD-CAPTURE, I'm running it with 512 samples (which I think should be "high enough"). Sample Rate is 48 kHz with the resolution 24 Bit.
Would another audio interface give better performance at the same amount of samples?

yes that's excessive.
it's a real hog of a patch, but i'd say either Studio One is inefficient, or your interface drivers are not so good. It runs about 60% here on macbook 2.7GHz at 24/48 (512 samples, built in soundcard) in Live 9, but dude, that's a big patch, I get the same on some Diva pads. I wouldn't these synths un-useable though, i just realise some patches kill CPU, so move on.

Installed Modular today. So two cents here and this cents will be compared to Reaktor.
First of all i'm totally in love with sound. Warm sound with fullness and richness of harmonics. Very nice for my ears. Like how it sounds much more than Reaktor Blocks.
What i do not like:
- Horrible presets management systems. Recently i thought that Reaktor is a nightmare, i was wrong.
- After logical Reaktor it's very hard to create my own patches. In Reaktor is so simple for me.
- Design.. UI/UX want me back to Windows 95 time. Completely hard to understand what-where-for-what.
In the end:
Great possibilities and usability VS sound quality. Now i need to think twice

wich version of windows do you use ?
Do you try Modular with other host with your setup ? (studio one is not the best alternative (S1V3 on OSX is buggy as hell !))
Maybe you should try in S1V2 to see if it happens again

I'm using Windows 10 64-bit. But I think the biggest problem is that almost none of the plugin developers are skilled enough to code their plugins for multi-core, or they are too lazy and non-customer oriented.hivkorn wrote:starflakeprj wrote:For me Softube Modular is more or less unusable. I know Studio One is one of the least CPU efficient DAWs out there. Only the fanboys would disagree. But for me it has the best workflow of all the ones I have tested, with no competitor even close.
I also tested, as mentioned in my last post, in Reaper. It's not as bad as in Studio One, but enough to make, at least this patch, unusable. I don't dare to think of using Modular in a song, one or two instances and I would be screwed. Don't think testing it in S1v2 would help much since not even Reaper can handle Modular with this patch in a flawless way.
When are the developers going to learn multi-core coding?
But we'll see, I'm looking to buy the Arturia AudioFuse when it comes out, as I suspect my current audio interface has a part in this bad performance. Roland hasn't even released a new driver since 2014 or so, so the abandoned the unit before I even bought it.

I think it's ouright impossible to develop fully modular plugin with multicore support. Live with it. Or develop your own and win the marketI think the biggest problem is that almost none of the plugin developers are skilled enough to code their plugins for multi-core, or they are too lazy and non-customer oriented.
You can still run another instance on another one of these 6 cores, right?
Excuse me, do you know what the RAM actually is? For sure it has nothing to do with plugin performance. I can see you RAM usage is at 16%. Next time just don't buy more than you need.Having an i7-4930K 6 cores @ 3.5 GHz and 64 GB of DDR3 RAM this is pretty annoying

Yes, I do actually know what RAM is. I have been working in IT for 20+ years, as a technician for 15 of them. I just stated the 64 just because there is always someone who is going to ask how much RAM I have.DJ Warmonger wrote:I think it's ouright impossible to develop fully modular plugin with multicore support. And for your information, I didn't purchase 64 GB to be used in music creation, but for 3D rendering and video editing.
So keep your attitude to yourself please!

i don't think it's possible to have an actual modular multicore plugin?

have you disabled the cpu power management in bios ? I also have a 6 core 5830k - when I use modular with power management i get 100% Cpu usage in ableton by some few presets, if i disable the power managemt the maximum cpu usage with these presets wents down to 40%. The average preset shows 10% cpu usage. I have overclocked to 4ghz
Modular doesn't use multicore, that why other plugins like diva don't show this behaviour.

I haven't actually tried disabling power management, mostly because I'm having a hard time believing that it actually works. During the use of, for instance, Modular, my CPU runs in "turbo mode" constantly. But I have nothing to loose I guess, the CPU might be throttling without the graphs showing it.sacer wrote:have you disabled the cpu power management in bios ? I might take a look at overclocking as well, have thinking of this as a last resort, and I will gain from that in 3D or fractal rendering as well.
Thank you for the tips

I'm no developer, but I can't see why it wouldn't be possible. But as none of my modular synth plugins have support for muli-core, it might be correct.sqigls wrote:i don't think it's possible to have an actual modular multicore plugin?

Well, single voice (monophonic) synths are often single threaded. As soon as RR, or something similar is implemented, there is no need not to implement multi thread rendering, to be honest.starflakeprj wrote:I'm no developer, but I can't see why it wouldn't be possible. Most traditional modular synths in vst form, are monophonic, without RR for instance.
I believe that the modular from Arturia (polyphonic) IS multithreaded. Just like their 2600 emulation. But again, those are polyphonic.

Ok, so basically one note per thread, and as a monophonic synth plays only on note at a time, the same thread is used over and over again.exmatproton wrote:Well, single voice (monophonic) synths are often single threaded. So round robin the notes' asses. Every new note will trigger o new thread. Should be possible to at least save some CPU power. While rendering a single image, it can be distributed over multiple cores. One note, and the following effect chain should also be possible. But again, I'm no developer
