This is the same method MJ used when he was working on Anthony Marinelli's Thriller.

Oddly enough, the Thriller album was one I was thinking about when the topic question was asked. Beyond the amount of talent playing on that album, the songs are at times deceptively simple yet the arrangements are amazing - for the most part Billie Jean is built around that repetitive bassline and simple chord stabs (excepting the pre-chorus section) but the additional instrumental elements that keep coming in and out, funk guitar here, strings there, just really make the song. Really atmospheric, quite a dark, adult theme that is far removed from Jackson's joyous music as a kid with the Jackson 5, but still ridiculously catchy, with hooks throughout. Plus contacts in radio, tv, newspapers, influential media... One success attracts another. Attracts also money. If you have money, you can afford consultations with better sound engineers so that the quality of your work increases. You can also afford learning resources to improve your music and performing skills.jabe wrote:Marketing.
It works like this:
0. Practice a lot, learn how to use your DAW (doesn't really matter which one) properly, get 110% out of it (the second most difficult part)
1. Produce a hit, get noticed (the third most difficult part)
2. Produce the second hit (the most difficult thing actually) and obtain good level marketing and help with all other things besides composing/performing by getting noticed.
This way the mentioned mainstream artist can afford to concentrate on making music and performing leaving all other things like setting up gigs, promotion (sometimes even postproduction) to others, and these others are professionals.
That's it. You also need lots of luck to be in the right place and the right time
