Mics, Gain, and Mixers

there is this issue that has been bothering me for a while... im soon going to consider a Mixer/soundcard combo (or something like the FW1884)

I have alwaz had the problem of getting enough levels using 58's, and other dynamics (on voice) into the DAW. Be it on the Mackies or on the Tascams. With the tascams it seems especially bad, even with the behringer B2 pro, which is a condenser. the Behringer UB seems a lot easier to work with.

anything i need to know ?

One can get a good level using the DM24 by twewaking the fag end of the trim pot very carefully (where there is a sudden boost of level) ... but then a slightly louder pasage and the DM24 pre's clip...

Hi Sidhu,

Its going to have to be a balance between pre amp and compression to get the loudest possible clean signal into your DAW... once in the DAW more compression/normalization to your taste...

u really dug this post up ! thanks for the reply. I do use onboard compression with the trim pot to control stttings.. but their are times when id rather bypass the compression and just get a clean hot signal.. anywaz.. the DM24 compressor is too slow for most applications (thats what i feel)

I know exactly what you mean Sidhu!

I have a Berhinger Ultra-Voice Digital as a mic pre and mostly use it to warm up my inputs not using compression - bit of a fine balance at times but worth the work IMO.

U have any idea on the Begriger tube pres ??? Im soon gonna be picking up a soundcard, and might need some extra pres. Am using the behringer UB pres right now, and they seem to be doing the job well.
