Sure, developers need to make a living but when they put their "free" products on sites like VSTPlanet and you end up seeing "Add To Cart" and "Facebook" and "Sign Up", what do you do?

Get to a safe space and molest a therapy dog?
This is the same method MJ used when he was working on Anthony Marinelli's Thriller.

Interesting that they have the magware Beatzille. Shady, shady site.

Hahaha. I used to didn't quite know what the word fondle meant (I thought it meant: to pet) but I would use it in sentences like "Time to fondle the cat." Eventually someone corrected me and said something like "that's what perverts do, fondle" and I said something like "Geez!! You are serious? Are you sure?" And I might have said something like "I knew it all along, I was just trying to be funny". But I don't think the person believed me because it was, I guess, a bad and obvious attempt at recovering whatever it was I was trying to recover.

I'm not sure if VSTPlanet is shady because of that. If you got a plugin from a magazine for free and then you share it with everybody, is that illegal?

I think I've downloaded something named Steinberg collections volume 1 and 2 there at VSTPlanet.

I think it's the developers themselves that put up these "Add To Cart" and Facebook links, etc. It's not VSTPlanet that does it.

Recently, I did sign up at a site named fruitytuts.com because they have Steinberg LM-4 to download for free, no "Add To Cart" and "Facebook" thingies there but they do require people to sign up or else one can't download anything. And they do state that they (fruitytuts.com) made/make sure that all download stuff there are legal. Now, if Steinberg LM-4 isn't actually free, I am wondering how many VST plugins I already have are not free. I have over 10,000 "free" plugins.

I'm pretty sure re-distributing magware without permission is not legal.

shouldn't that be ... tinstaafl :?:

I'm kind of puzzled. If I got something for free legally, I can't share it? For example, I can email the stoooner plugin to my buddies, right? But because I got a VST plugin for free from a magazine, I can't share that "free" plugin with my buddies or anyone? But if I can do that, why can't VSTPlanet?

Depends on the plugins EULA. Some devs don't allow redistribution unless you get permission.

Post

Oh oh oh I think I just got it. The magazine itself isn't free. But generally, in the past, most "free" VST plugins were actually free and had no catches and most developers didn't make you jump hoops. But maybe that's the past and hoops is the now and the future.

Yes, because it is a agreement between the company who did the plugin, and the mag to release the plugin for the mag's content, which means that it is also a selling factor for the mag. You can't just put magware on your site, and distribute it at discretion. You can't even distribute freeware at discretion, if the author doesn't allow the free distribution of the plugin.

you cant share anyone's copyrighted work unless you have permission.

and just because the plugin didnt cost you any money that doesnt mean you automatically get that permission.
