One very irritating feature, I wonder how many of you suffer for this?
Namely time to time, sometimes rather often, the Live fails to open the audio, connected to the USB.

This is not computer-spesific, because now my 3rd lap top in a row has this symptom.

The OSs have been Win 7, Win 8.1 and now Win 10.
Live versions 8-9
My audio interface is UA-25-EX.

Un- and re-connecting the USB helps sometimes, mostly not.
Is booting the computer the only option?

Have you tried with different DAWs, in order to get what causes the issue?
Audio preferences (INs and OUTs) are OK in Ableton Live?
I can't help you in the OS side because I'm an Apple user.

No, I have used only the Live lately.
All settings should be OK. Its like the software would time to time loose the port, or the audio interface. Live Preferencies just says "fails to open".

I only see that error when another app was already using the same ASIO driver, since ASIO (usually) does not allow 2 apps using it at the same time.

I can't see the connection to the shared ASIO driver, in my case.

Maybe a process (of a ASIO-using app) that did not close properly, hanging in the background?

Why the DAW (Live 9) fails to open audio port?
