Just for a change, no requests for 'classic' guitar sounds from me, just want a nice fizzy, compressed sound a bit like New Order used frequently (think 'State of the Nation')

I used to get a decent sound with my old Session amp (long gone...) but haven't had much luck with my J Station or any VSTs; either too fizzy/noisy (lacking body) or just dull.

Any suggestions?

And if anyone can nail a Steve Albini tone as well for me then, well, I'll be kinda grateful.

That was just MDA combo, 4x12 setting, and a touch of chorus and a bit of eq.

Got to love Bernard Sumners guitar playing, he's shite, but brilliant at the same time.

so, no Albini suggestions then?

Maybe Buz and a cheap-sounding reverb in the right order...?

Hehe, well it was me doing the guitar! Aye, MDA combo does have that Husker Du kind of sound. Not sure for more Albini type stuff, I'd probably give a try to tubebaby, I've got some really spikey type sounds from it before;

Be careful with those mids though (I usually have to use a lot of eq cut after it), otherwise it all gets a bit wedding present!

I think Steve Albini uses JCM800 and Mig60. You can probably replicate the sound with gSuite JCM900?

Yeah, the JCM900 can definitely do albini sound. By the way, it's part of the Simulanalog pack. You probably have to EQ/saturate the output from JCM900 or overdub the identical guitar track with a little bit different setting and pan them left and right.

Hmm, that sounds like a standard marshall kind of sound. When I think of Steve Albini, at least from the Big Black days, it's a lot nastier, more like this (if you'll forgive my bastardisation of the riff from 'jordan minnesota

Which is just the 'power' preset from tubebaby vst with a little stereo chorus after it. Probably needs a bit more treble though to really get that nasty cutting sound!

Yeah, he uses Orage amps, too. So I guess "Albini sound" is not sounds of specific amps, but how he records the amp. I heard that he doesn't like compressions or fx's and uses lots of ribbon mics. With that in mind, maybe you can replicate his warm+raw sound?

It's funny that we're discussing how we can replicate the sound of an anti-digital engineer with computers, though.

ooh sorry, missed the Albini discussion...

yeah, not bad DT, I think some kind of modulation fx (like chorus) is a big part of the BB sound (think some of the parts in The Model) The big difference to my ears is that it's not a real saturated fuzz like Husker Du, it's almost a clean sound taken to extremes.

Nowadays it's all 'Harmonic Perculators' I believe...

Courtney Love made a cutting comment once (yeah, really...) about just slapping your reverb up to 10 or something. Never found the sound she meant but she did do a pretty good take on it on the 'Pretty on the inside' album in places.

But yes, Albini would hate us (pity us?

) for trying to get his sound digitally.
