can someone suggest an accurate set of cans in the $150 (or less) price range ?

primarily interested in the type that sit around the ear rather than on it.

If you want accuracy, make sure you get open open-backed pair, as they give more balanced results. You will get more spill though, which could be a problem if you are recording whilst wearing them.

I have a pair of Beyerdynamic DT990 Pros here, which do me proud for late-night mixing duties

ive been eyeing these things for a while now, but they only run 17hz and above. the beyerdynamic DT770 Pro's are a little expensive. will i miss the bass u think?

I use a pair of Sennheiser HD590 (they have an open back) and hardly ever fool me.
Very comfy too; I can ware them for hours.

But do your final mix on monitors, not on headphones. (HEY, somebody had to say that!

)

I find the DT990s a bit tight across the head, but other than that, no complaints.

yup.. my sentiment exactly, can be a bit irritating after hours of use but they sounds great (sometimes too great)

AKG 240S Studio forever - absolutely great for studio monitoring.
I had the normal AKG240 before with 600 Ohm impedance, my new AKG240S has less impedance (just sounds louder).
I got the AKG240-S for 120 EUR !

AKG240S are standard in most professional studios.

And they're very good.

I once had the Beyer DT100s. Too heavy. Uncomfortable compared to the AKG240s. Also I didn't find the frequency response very accurate - the bass is too low and mids are emphasised.

Yep, While I don't find mine that uncomfortable - except in hot weather, I do agree that the bass is too low with emphasised mids.

I use mine when I'm recording loud stuff such as GT cars. I like them in this respect because those big earpads cut out around 20dB from external sources.

I'd probably look elsewhere for a 'monitoring' headphone than the DT 100.

best $150 headphones, for monitoring
