What's Not To Like About The Beatles?

I think the Beatles are one of the greatest bands ever. I love just about their entire catalog, from the early boy band days to the later psychedelic music, as well as their solo work.
I tend to think of the Beatles and Depeche Mode in much the same way, with the same sort of musical evolution.

I'm a fan. Besides a bunch of wonderful songs, The Beatles was the only top pop band, I can think of, that cared to experiment and were brave enough to put that on record. Imagine Britney Spears, or even Metallica sparing 8 minutes of million selling record for Revolution 9, as silly as it is.
On the other hand I find some of the songs (mostly Paul's) super annoying, I can't stand listening to Yesterday, Let it Be, Michelle, Obladi Oblada, Long and Winding Road... What makes it worse, is that they are also super catchy and it's hard to get rid of them, once they are in.

I was heavily influenced by the Beatles music since I was a teen, and still love to hear their music on the radio sometimes. I do listen to the radio, because that's all we can do at work.
I seriously can't even think of how someone could not like the Beatles. Certain songs I don't like, but as a complete package, they were one of the greatest bands ever.

Can't stomach them mostly - I can think of maybe 5-6 songs I kindof like but 2 of those were covered better by other people. Then I don't like Michael Jackson either, or Elvis, or Depeche Mode.

I don't like . . . that they broke-up. I'd like to imagine that they might have continued to mature both as musicians and as humans - together. Example would be bands like U2 : stayed together in spite of the fame and grew.
Those of you haters - I'd challenge you to name one musician who is capable or writing a better melody than P.McCartney.

You cannot convince people to change their "taste" in something with pseudo-intellectual arguments. I much prefer the melodies in Aphex Twin's "Selected Ambient Works" any day of the week to anything that McCartney has ever done, and I like a lot of his work.Mister Natural wrote:I don't like . . . that they broke-up. What exactly is your objective measurement of "melody quality?"

Posh classical lad Goodall explains it all in a rather good Channel 4 documentary;
No complaints here. I probably sail slightly against the prevailing orthodoxy in that for me Macartney was always a better writer than Lennon.

You know, just yesterday I drove by a bus stop and saw an ad for scientology. It occurred to me that it was somebody's job to sort out exactly where to put those ads and to evaluate how well they were performing and what-not. I found the idea of doing that for a living somewhat depressing, but, coming up with these songs, and then recording them? I think I'd rather pimp scientology.jacqueslacouth wrote:The WigglesMister Natural wrote:I don't like . . . that they broke-up. Yes, but those guys made TONS of money from that vile filth. I'd have to seriously consider selling out if the opportunity presented itself.ghettosynth wrote:You know, just yesterday I drove by a bus stop and saw an ad for scientology.
