Monark is seriously impressive.

The image really tells you all that needs to be done, though... :/ Even the modules that are necessary are named in the pic, and you can easily find them by searching via text (press Ctrl+F while in this edit mode to open a searchbox).

Of all Minimoog emulations to my ears the feedback implementation of Monark sounds best.
While in TheLegend there is only some bass boost, it's a real fun to play with the two different feedback modes in Monark.

Yeah Monark sounds heavenly. I'm seldom going for the classic Minimoog sound but it is by far the most "true" sounding software synth I've ever heard. Sounds real and fantastic and cuts through everything.

Always wanted to ask this, but, i have a hard time getting a vowel like sound from the filter FM, as has been shown in this video:
Maybe i'm doing something wrong... sounds amazing in the video, and sounds like utter crap, when i try it.
If someone knows how to do this in Monark, i'd be very happy to know.

Yes, most synths which updates really at audio rate should have no problem with it.Yorrrrrr wrote:The Legend can do it, I guess Monark too (or not?).
Mostly the resonance can be very different.

It's a Retrosound video. They always sound amazing, even more amazing than the synths he shows off.chk071 wrote:sounds amazing in the video.
To get the same sound: Add a channel strip with heavy overdrive a good portion of limiting, add plenty of delay and salt with a of pinch reverb.

Indeed. It's not like their synths go into some mediocre basic sound card all dry. They have some serious mixing/mastering chops. You can clearly hear that the audio has been heavily post processed on virtually all their later clips. Ok, they do screw up every once in a while (like the newly released PPG wave 2.2 clip where you have some annoying clipping going on).
EDIT: actually, it seems like the left channel on their preamp/soundcard is wonky.. or one of the effects units has issues by being driven too hard. On the other PPG wave video the same clipping seems to be happening. Annoying..
Also, they do actually program stuff very delicately and have excellent taste in what sounds to show (imho). It's a fantastic youtube channel!

RetroSound is Marko Ettlich and AFAIK there is no other person involved with those videos.EvilDragon wrote:They? Isn't it just one guy?
The YouTube videos of both RetroSound and Synthmania are great indeed.
Recently i also enjoy the videos of MrFirechild really much. Those videos are usually high quality in terms of sound and video. Mr Firechild owns tons of great and also expnsive synths like e.g. CS-80, Prophet 10 and even a Schmidt Eightvoice (besides many others).

Yep, they are great. However, they sometimes cause me some grief when people compare his videos to our stuff and find "your stuff doesn't sound like the real deal" - which is, of course, because the videos are made to sound better than the actual hardware does.
Which I assume is what happened here. I'm fairly sure his Minimoog doesn't sound leagues better than Monark, even though the video may give that impression.

I remember this video. I was surprised also that Minimoog could make such voices (not that I ever owned one!). I also remember that I tried to do that with Monark and failed. I think I'm going to try again with Monark and the Legend.
Can RePro~1 make such sounds? I might also give it a go.

Using: Cubase Pro 15, Reason 13, Tascam US-4x4HR, MODX6, DM12D, LaunchKey 49, Yamaha guitar(Pacifica 612v) and bass (BB234) and some virtual instruments and synths.

Interesting. I always thought the sounds were more or less dry too. But then, the guy is a heavy hardware advocate, so, at least that's not too surprising.Urs wrote:It's a Retrosound video. The "amazing" comment was rather aimed at the sound itself though. Would love to replicate that with Monark. I'll have another go at it later, most probably, i just forgot to do something.

This kind of "wovel" sound may be made by feeding an oscillator with almost closed filter and high resonance into some bitcrushing or ratecrushing stage. So I assume that there may be something after the synth in the signal path which actually gives this effect.
You may think you can fly ... but you better not try
