Which percussion instrument sounds like a bell, but with a changing pitch over the duration of the note? I've heard this sound in some latin-influenced music, but I'm not sure which instrument produces that sound.

Back in school band we used to have these tubular bells with a pedal that would change the pitch.

I wonder if people are striking and flexing a musical saw to generate this sound? I think that might work, but I'm not sure that is how the sounds I've heard were created.
