What makes surf guitar sound like surf guitar?

Yeah, you read the subject. What is it? Nothing I do sounds quite right, even on (gasp!) an actual guitar (note: me playing guitar is a bit like an amoeba earning a master's degree). Can't seem to find any surf guitar samples. The Slayer2 demo seems to approach the '80's faster than it approaches surf, woody or no. Dunno what the sound technically is is, either. Sometimes seems reverby, but no reverb sounds right. Is it more a style of playing? Or am I just a total moron?

But seriously, a ton of reverb will work, and you don't even have to play the same as dick.
I don't know what surf bands you like or what equip you have so maybe you can post some of that stuff. Should be pretty easy still.

strum slowly using simple chords on just the high three strings and use the wammy bar... or maybe add some simple slide guitar with the guitar tuned to an e Chord.

You do need the big reverb but it's also the kind of guitar you use. Everything i play on my Broadcaster copy sounds irritatingly like surf guitar, for instance. It's really jangly.Secretions wrote:Yeah, you read the subject. What is it? The Atlantics are a good band for surf guitar, try them out.
