You said it yourself, many times, that it's your fault for not trying it. Nothing worth ranting about.
Is there a demo version?
I referenced him - "I should have gone to a music store and demoed the thing first". This is something that is an option for some, and I don't understand why those who are 'on the fence' don't take the opportunity. It's a hardly a no-brainer to just drop $500 when you don't know anything about a product.

Thing is, even if you don't get to demo in-store, this topic i.e the lack of a gm-like set of 'standards' has been played out so many times, and over many forums, that it would be very easy to find out if Omnisphere has a non-burnt piano.

Even if you could not find this info out, surely, rather than starting a thread to lament, rant etc., the op could have started a thread before buying to see if it was the product he wanted/needed.

Internet: Hey kid, wanna go to the museum?

Me: Oh I love museums!

Internet: Well this is the biggest and bestest museum in the world, your gonna love it!

Me: Oh boy I'm so excited!

Anyway, 500 bucks isn't that much money. ("Hey JP, how much do synths cost in The Matrix?"). A basic upright piano of decent quality is a multiple of that figure. It's just that I think a piano sounds quite a lot better than whacking a lightbulb with a pencil and running it through a granulator.

But it doesn't surprise me that Omnisphere is indeed the sound of the modern motion picture... the modern motion picture is mostly crap. I mean I'm sure that armed with Omnisphere I'm probably ready to score Fast n' Furious 22 but I can't say I find that inspiring.

I've also recently discovered that apparently Omnisphere is used a lot in "contemporary worship music." Lol how does that go? "Ave Maria, gratia plena" BEEYOWWWUZUBZUBZUB!

Pass.

Interesting to see some folks get all bent out of shape about this thread though. lol I'm on the verge of depression? Aw somebody criticized baby's favorite toy and hurt his widdle feewings! Pathetic.

This speaks volumes about what kind of person you are. How about, "whatever the Wachowski's have..."?Sorry that their non-binary gender association is such a burden to you. Also, when I last checked, their soundtracks are filled with traditional instruments. So, you can add another thing to the list of what you're clueless about.
aumordia wrote:I'm pretty clueless about spectrasonics as a company, I saw the price tags and figured that Keyscape and Trillian must be like mini specialized variants of the more expensive Omni, which would surely cover the same ground and then some. Whoops. Hey, my family is growing so my attention span isn't the best as of late. Mea culpa.
You could have stopped at "clueless." You bought a $479 instrument without actually doing some research into what it does? Then you have the nerve to come and complain about it on a public forum? :dog:
aumordia wrote:On a different note: let me take a moment to address the insolent swine posting as zerocrossing, implying that I can't program a synth. Buddy, I am almost certainly a better synth programmer than you. Because not only can I program synths, I can write synthesizer programs. Go to zhevny.com/specimen. That's the silly toy that I created as a hobby when I was an idiot teenager,
Newsflash: You may not be a teenager any more, but it's clear the first part of that phrase stuck.

aumordia wrote:So, what am I missing? I'm trying to love this thing. Help me out KVR. I can't even like it as just a synth. For $500, it feels pretty limited and clunky, and really not all that special. I think the included sounds are supposed to be what makes it so great. But you know why nobody played a piano with a bow for hundreds of years? Because it sounds like crap! I don't need a gig of samples of that. :x

Rant over. Feels bad man. Please halp.
Didn't bother to read the whole thread so my apologies if it's been said before.

Omnisphere is the coolest thing on my computer. If one thing has to remain - this is the one. But that being said - it has a character of its own, and some sounds are more difficult to make than in other plugins. For example - to create a monster bass sound takes about 2 minutes in Diva. You pick the oscillators, filters, envelopes - maybe stack up two instances. Click click click. Done = speakers blown and neighbour angry. Doing the same in Omnisphere takes more work and sometimes it doesn't take you where you want.

The key here is to understand that in the year 2017 there is still no plugin/synth that rules them all. I love Diva. I go bananas with Imposcar (it's true - I can sit just pressing random keys for hours). My Virus TI still make my jaw drop - and I work as a sound designer.

But if all else has to go. Omnisphere stays. My biggest advice to you is to keep Omnisphere - go through the library, buy a few presets packs - mark up the sounds that you like. Tweak them. It took me a couple of years to "get" Omnisphere from a sound designing perspective - but when it does - man... the world is my oyster.

Its like a Seinfeld episode. Kramer can't BELIEVE that HE, who can program ANY synth, ACTUALLY bought the WRONG SYNTH!! George tells him every synth is made for only ONE type of person and this synth was NOT made for YOU! Jerry says lets go talk to Skippy the Glitch musician he'll patch up your synth but Elaine interrupts, Wait I can think of six nice cute piano synths that would like you better. Cut to a music store with all the customers arguing about which sounds CAN and CANNOT be made with This Plugin.

+1. That snide, irrelevant aside struck me the same way.

Of course everyone likes other things but especially the sound design and the sound sources which comes with Omnisphere (plus all the great phrases i couldn´t produce myself) are awesome.
There really seems to be something not right in the life of the OP when i read his posts here.
I hope everything goes well soon.....
A bit strange he said he is an amazing sound designer and bla bla bla but think Omnisphere lacks traditionell sounds (which is a well known thing anyway if you just search a bit about it).
I like the psychoacoustic parts of the sound design and even if you don´t like it i wonder why a such amazing sound designer don´t see what sound designers have done with Omnisphere.
It sounds more like a big frustration about a failed impulse buy and that most people doesn´t agree seems to end in more frustration.
I really can understand that....was there too.
But you better searching for a psychology forum :)
Calm down, ask Spectrasonics if they let you sell your licence and maybe 2 people are happy soon!
They are awesome people which loves what they do and i can hear and feel that every time i open a tool from them and play with it.

This thread is hilarious.

I just shelled out £800 on an Analog Four and it doesn't even have a keyboard. How am I supposed to play it? This synth is crap :x
