I really enjoyed programming the DX7 back in the day, but sampling the ROM presets does nothing for me.
We got some really out-there sounds out of it. The ever-popular 'Tines' has a lot to answer for in shitty 80s music, and Frank Zappa's perhaps worst-sounding band in 1984 relied on a really thin mallets approach with no Ed Mann.
I don't remember a lot else. But as to sound, per se, it's really dated.

Nice to hear a bit of enthusiasm for the idea!bugrodo wrote:Sounds fantastic, personally I think it's an amazing contribution to put these sounds from a complete set of dx7 carts through the dx5, then make it available in kontakt. For historical value alone it's fantastic, I can't wait to hear them! No doubt they will be musically useful too. Please let us know when you've started this! I'll be waiting with wallet ready!
We're underway. The plan at the moment is to sample the DX7 II's internal presets from a DX7 II (so they sound like they should), and then embark on the cartridge ROM sounds via the DX5, since most people – us included – think that's the way to go. We're hoping to have the initial DX7 II stuff done by early next month, and then it'll be on to the slightly more esoteric cartridge sounds
