I'm looking at getting a new computer system, because my p4 1.8 is just not working out anymore.

What do you think of the specs below.

asus k8v-se deluxe mobo
amd 64 3200
1 gig Kingston ddr 400 ram
200 gig JD sata
Dual layer dvd burner
g-force 256 mb video card
antec sonata case

The person I spoke said they could build it for $1082. Also do I really need a second hard drive? They suggested I get a wd raptor 36 gig 10000 rpm for $121 extra. They said I can use the wd raptor as a bootable drive and use my 200 gig for backup; but one 200 gig drive should be enough right. I will just back up my projects on dvd, I think the dual layer burner can handle up to 8 gigs that should be enough for a couple of projects. The programs I'm using are reason 2.5 and cubase sx 2.2.

I reckon you might wanna look at the price difference to step up to the A64/754 3400.

The GForce card is way overspecced for whats needed for a DAW.

If you go for the Raptor as well, dont use it as your boot drive, use it as your audio drive. Although I dont reckon the extra expense is needed if you dont need tons of audio tracks, any 80Gb SATA drive should be fine for a dedicated audio drive. But do consider a dedicated drive.

Check out the noise specs for the case, graphics card and CPU fan.

That's about the price i've been getting everywhere I call in the atlanta, ga area. About $120 to $130 more for the 2nd hard drive.

The price difference in the a64 3200 and 3400 is about $80 to $90; but I was told the difference in performance is not that much.

What is the difference between the 2 performance wise? I was told the the asus k8v-se deluxe was the best board for the a64. What's the price difference?The asus k8v-se deluxe runs for about $125

Performance wise? Not a big difference. Too less to bother with. It seems that VIA chipsets are getting better, compatibility wise, but I still didn't dare to get a VIA chipset. And so I went for an MSI K8N Neo FSR board with an nForce3 250Gb chip. Not a long time ago I heard someone in this forum talking about Cubase SX 2 crashes. As it's not necessarily his (Athlon 64) VIA chipset causing these problems, I'm still wondering... I'm using Cubase SX 2 too... and without a single crash.

My board was 109 euros (including 19% VAT).

I have the same case...It's way quiet, but I use a fanless video card and a Zalman CPU cooler...I had the standard cooler on the CPU at first and it was noisy as f**k so I switched it out PDQ...I'd think using a Raptor could make things noisy though...at least that's what the peeps in Akihabara were saying...

I always chime in and say this cos it's such a good idea: Norton Ghost. Don't use their antivirus though.

I'm getting a new computer soon and I am getting 2 gigs of ram. I would defiently recommend that but it's up to you.

I would say ditch the 200 gig drive and get dual 80 (or whatever) gig drives instead. Regular old ATA-133 7200 RPM, but with 8MB cache and some sort of fluidbearing technology (ie. almost any current-generation EIDE drive).

Who wants one collosal drive? No thanks. As you said, you'll be backing up to DVD anyhow, so you'll get MUCH better performance out of having a dedicated audio drive.

1GB RAM should be plenty, though if they give you a deal, 2GB is a nice cushion. If it's not a spectacular deal, you can always buy more later if you need it <shrug>.

Don't know a thing about the motherboards, so no comments there, though VIA chipsets have been sorted out since the KT-333 generation, so all the stuff you hear about them being unreliable is largely outdated information. Still, that other one suggested sounds like a charmer!

Agreed about the video card-- you don't want a monster like that. Costs too much for something that you'll never get any use out of, and which will contribute to heat and noise levels.

Also agreed about the Raptor-- 7200rpm is plenty for mega-multi audio streams, especially if you have a 2-disc setup. Getting the 'performance' 10000rpm drive will just add a lot of racket for no discernable payoff.

Looks pretty similar to my new setup. I have that A64 Chip and MoBo, working beautifully, no conflicts with anything and rock solid, not a crash yet. I would agree and say thats over kill with the Graphics Card, I got a Radeon 9200SE 128Mg Card, works fine and I have no problem doing basic video editing with it and watchin DivX/DVD Movies etc. Unless u want to play games, then the card I got is plenty good enough, no fan on it as well so helps keep system noise to a minimum. I agree about the hard drives. Would probably be just as cheap to get a 80Gb SATA drive for OS/Appz and then another 80Gb+ drive just for audio files.
