Laptop CPU going down in Heat??

Is it the case that when a laptop gets hot, that the processor speed goes down?

I have a 1.7Ghz laptop and use it on its Laptop
base/Docking Station (this has more USB's for my keyboard/Midi interface etc)

Obviously after a long time of use for audio etc the unit gets hot. But the 1.7Ghz seemed to have dropped to 1.2Ghz?!

Is there any reason for this? is it the Heat or the docking station (im using it now and its back up to 1.7Ghz)

I just need to know so i can conserve my CPU .

I loose cpu when the battery goes into recharge or I boot on battery power alone..as for heat,,mine gets real hot without slowing,,,but I will double check..
