Video Monitor Question - LM miscellany part 1

Hey all,

I couldn't decide whether or not to put all my questions in one thread or separate, so I went with separate.

First one: I'm wondering about the refresh rate on monitors. Allegedly the higher the better, but I supposedly have my Sony Trinitron set for 1024 X 768 at 85 Hz using a Radeon 7000 (32-bit colour), and my piece of crap IBM E51 on an ATI Mach64 (PCI) at 800 X 600 at 70 Hz, 16-bit colour.

The IBM one doesn't seem flickery, while the Sony has noticeable flicker when I look at it, and even more pronounced flicker when I use my peripheral vision to "look" at it.

Any ideas as to what gives?
