That's right. I can get a free P4 ibm t30 thinkpad, but the LCD screen is severely cracked. The housing is ok. The PC works 'cause you can plug it into a regular monitor and it slaves away for you.
worst case scenerio is that I use it as another computer:)
Can anyone recomend a reputible company for replacing a LCD screen?
any idea on the cost?

I can't help you with where to buy or expected cost, but I can say that my T30 has been great. It rugged and dependable. So I'd say go ahead and fix it, it's worth it!

You have to be really careful with looking for LCDs..
I need a new one for my Toshiba laptop. Cheapest price I've found is around $375.
You need to find out what the part number is for your LCD. If it isn't in any documentation, take the LCD out and look on the back. My part number looks like this:
LTN150XB-L01
But this *same* screen is listed under many differnt numbers! For instance, Compaq uses this screen and numbers it several different ways.
There are many places to find the screens, but you should hunt around for the best price.

I'm looking forware to it. My main PC is a amd athlon t-bird 900 mhz. So even if I plug a monitor into this I figure I'll be doing myself a favor.
I found some companies to call. I'll ask around. I don't know if I can put this in myself or not.

My Toshiba didn't want to let me use a monitor as the main screen, but I downloaded UltraMon, and finally with some finagling, most of which I can't even remember now I'm afraid.. I got it working. I even shut off my half crippled laptop LCD and just used it like a desktop. It was a trial getting it to work right, but once it did I was golden.

it's gonna cost $500 to fix it, and I have to buy a battery for it too. I think I'll just use it as a PC.

Check e-bay for sure. I replaced an LCD monitor for a Mac 1400 powerbook for less than half of what the Mac repair shop wanted . I did the labour myself but it worked great. Often the sellers will sell you the whole upper half (lid with LCD, screws , wiring harness etc)
