About the voting. I'm not sure how the current voting is, but I think of simple practical solutions (or trying to!).

I would suggest that any KVR member can vote by posting his/her top 5:
1. Song a by Artist 1
2. Song b by Artist 2
3. Song c by Artist 3
4. Song d by Artist 4
5. Song e by Artist 5

Giving 5 points to the first place and 4 points for the 2nd place and so on. In the end which song has the most points win.

I really can't analyse all 50 or 100 songs and must be like a judge giving all the details of every song! Instead I choose what I like the most 5 and concentrate on them so I can classify them from 1st to 5th position. I mean why I should spend my time with a song I don't like!

I've been really busy these last few months since my first OSC with moving house and such like and now that is (almost finished) this challenge goes live so I'll be really keen to do an entry this month. I was going to ask if it was OK to use hardware (i.e. my Monomachine in this case) but I suspect, based on the current conversation, that would just be adding more complication.

So, sticking with software and I'd be really keen to do something using either Reaktor Blocks or Max For Cats' Oscillot - so, as long as I avoid modules which use sampling/granular etc I should be fine to go with that? If that was too open-ended then I'd probably play it safer still by going for something like Zebra.

Good question. It's just software for now, though in the future we could do a hardware challenge.

The more I think about this the more I strongly feel that we should divide this month into two categories.

Paid Synths
Free Synths

That way, it cuts the voting in half, at least theoretically. A lot of people may take the free synth route (like me) thinking that the competition will be easier since most of the big guns will probably go the paid route. This adds a strategic element to this month. Do you go for the "easier to make great sounds but probably tougher competition" or the "harder to make great sounds but probably easier competition" route? There are pluses and minuses to each. And I think, law of averages usually ruling these things, we'll end up voting for 50 tracks instead of 100.

I don't know what the logistics will be to BJ to pull this off, but I do think it makes for a more interesting and strategic competition as well as a more enjoyable one all the way around for everybody. Those who don't own paid for synths won't have to go up against people with $200 workstations. And there's less voting for participants to have to do.

My 2 cents for whatever they're worth.

I think there is no need to separate this OSC. People here prove that it does not matter what you use. What matters? How u use it and what u can do with it and not what it can do for you. . Most people spending too much time to find perfect synth instead spending more time to perfect just one.

I'm trying to get going with Alsa Modular Synth. But so far not much luck. Either I'm doing it wrong or some software is clearly broken. Because Linux btw...

I disagree. OSC as it is now is almost closed or not that open circle. I always see the same names.

There is the commercial world out there and most important the 'instrument' world. How nice is to listen to a piece of music or a song just done by acoustic guitar and a voice? Or a nice piece of jazz or blues done with a piano?

So in reality we need three competitions (with the One Instrument Only added, which even more general as it is mostly has recorded audio or samples). That not only would bring new members to KVR but it would make the variety of the society interesting. Well, unless, the OSC members just want to feel something special of course!

Yes, it is OSC, and the only competition in KVR. Not that I can't do a music without a competition, but being in a competition gives a nice motive and social feeling by hearing the other's work ..etc. Unfortunately, my favourite synths/instruments are not free, and I really want to use them instead of other synths.

I don't have the resources/ability to organise such a competition (maybe I can help, but I don't have a website or even a commercial subscription to SoundCloud)!, so, I'm only suggesting! Feel free to ignore me

I can also listen carefully to the 5 songs I chose and analyse them according to my knowledge, then I can judge which is number 1 .. to number 5 according to my taste and I even can write a paragraph or two about what I like in that song or this song and why I chose it ..etc. However, I can't do that with 50+ songs especially if there are not what I like! I don't think it is strange to think this way.

No problem. I can give all the unchosen tracks 1 point and give 6 points to 2 points for my fav 5 songs! You see? I'm flexible if that doesn't change a thing
