First time I try to work with video clip inside my Live 9 64 bit session (Win 10).
I have the latest QuickTime installed.
Unfortunately Live 64 bit doesn't accept directly the QuickTime, not to mention any other video format.
Live 9 site recommend the codec
ffdshow 1.3.453, which I installed.
But how to use it?, only installing did not solve anything.
Some other link recommend the Haali media splitter.
Could someone tell me
1. Which programm(s) I need
2. What is the procedure to get video in the format Live 64 bit acceos it :help:

Ableton have done a pretty thorough guide - https://help.ableton.com/hc/en-us/artic ... -Live-Win-

I personally recommend the codec pack K-Lite Mega Codec Pack listed at the bottom of that page: http://www.codecguide.com/download_k-li ... k_mega.htm

It's let me play back pretty much any single encoded video format I've every thrown at it !

Yes, I've red that Ableton site. However, it doesn't explain in what settings and how to do the coding.
ffdshow is not very user friendly, I think I use that once it is installed.

Anyone knows the ffdshow?

Whatever's used, it has to have a component in the Ableton program folder so it can be accessed. In Cubase, it's Components, IIRC. The install media may or may not allow selecting the desired path. If not, it has to be moved manually. YMMV

Before possibly changing yo the K-Lite: referring to the bustedfist comment, does the K-Lite work differently, i.e. you run your video through the conversion, no connection to the Live needed?

Post

Nothing changes or is converted on your system - Just that K-Lite installs a vast amount of codecs that any software that can use these third party codecs (e.g. Adobe Premiere, Ableton, Media Player Classic) should be able to play back the file.

Ableton should happily play any mov or mp4 encapsulated file without any transcoding, as long as you have the necessary codec installed on your system.

dont; there's no need to move anything into the Live folder.
An idiot on Set Theory:
"In some cases there is an object called red that contains everything that is red. In much the same way a pot is a plate."

To get this correctly: you just install the K-Lite, after that you don't need manually convert your files, everything happens in the background.
How e.g. Live 9 finds the codec which it uses?
And why after installing the ffdshow the Live don't do the conversion, can these codecs Ableton recommends in its site work so differently?

Post

Not know the answer to the last question, but as regards the first two: Yep it should be in the background, and Ableton should find it as I believe the available codecs are written to some list in the Windows Registry for reference in other applications.

Exactly. As per the Ableton page referred to earlier, the codecs available to it will be those registered as available DirectShow filters. That means they'll be written and installed in a specific way as to be integrated in to Windows' standard handling of media file formats.

Well, the 'why' is probably going to be that you still dont have the right codec for the video. And since there are so many possible codecs for video out there, Ableton cant give you an authoritive link to something that contains every single option out there. The pckages they're pointing you at are well-known, free, safe bundles of commonly used codecs.

So at this point, I'd ask; what codec has been used to make your videofile (you havent said, as far as I can see) and how are you trying to bring the video into Live?

Great, I replaced the ffdshow by the K-Lite and this seems to work like a sharm. No other tricks needed. Thank you! :)

In the first test I noticed a couple of things which you may know the answer:

1. The QuickTime window screen appears over the file once you drag it in to the Live. But once you do something else in the arragement, the screen disappears. How to get the screen visual again? No double click the file etc. seems to help. Is re-launching the clip only option?

2. We know that Ableton's policy has always been: no time line in the Live. I always wondered why, but in the video work you really needed one. Is there any add-ons or "time line plugins" awailable for the Live, for these purposes?

Q1 - If you right click on the video clip there should be a menu item to show the re show the video window again
Q2 - In arrangement view the top timeline will be bars & measures, but the bottom of the arrangement view window should show the normal time in minutes and seconds

Live has always had a timeline iirc. Its at the bottom of the arrangement view.

Once again, my gratitude. Funny, I've used Live for years, newer noticed the time ruler.
However, it seems that Live doesn't tell the excact, numeric time, only the visual ruler(?)
