Their reverb plugins are also really inexpensively prized these days - it's just the dongle that was stopping me so far... I'm really torn here.ChamomileShark wrote:hmm, Lexicon might be of interest. I'll think about it.

I started out with soft iLok thanks to some freebies. At that time I had a couple that required the dongle and so I wasn't able to use them. A new unused iLok came up for sale locally and I picked it up. It's worked flawlessly and while soft iLok is convenient, I feel the dongle is safer if you have a stationary desktop with plenty of USB ports.
While there's always a chance of a dongle dying, there's more points of failure in a computer than a usb key. And licences like R2 which are aimed at dongles often only have a single activation. So if your hard disk dies without a backup or your motherboard/ethernet controller goes out you've burned your licence.
In the meantime you can redeem the code in the iLok Manager and have it in case EA later decide to allow soft iLok. That happened for me with UVI and Soundtoys.

I had a few licenses attached to a computer that died. Once dead, there was no way for me to transfer the licenses to the key. I emailed the developers and they revoked the licenses from the dead machine and reissued them so that I could put them on the iLok.

For what it's worth, I was 100% anti-iLok far many many years. Recently, I really wanted to get into some plugins (particularly Relab and Softube) and thought, what the hell, let's try this. Honestly (at least on Mac), it's all very seamless and easy. The dongle (esp the iLok 3) is just fine, plug it in and forget about it. I'm used to having a dongle for Cubase, so this wasn't a huge deal at all.
For me personally, Relab's LX480 (which is a Lexicon 480L replica) is enough reason to own an iLok 2. It is imho the finest reverb plugin ever produced, it has a depth which I have never heard in software reverbs. R2 is in a similar league.
You should be able to create an iLok account, install iLok License Manager and just add the code to your account. At least that way, if you change your mind about the iLok in future, you haven't missed out on the plugin.
Nothing against ValhallaDSP verbs though, I own and really like VVV, but I rarely use it now with the LX480, ArtsAcoustic Reverb and now especially with R2 which does gated reverbs incredibly well!
P.S.: I do think it's very immoral of people to be selling these plugins which they got them for free. But it doesn't seem that Focusrite or the vendors have done anything to prevent this.

One unique thing about R2 (for Cubase users) is that the VST3 version does actually stop processing when the audio stops, so this could be much more efficient when used as an insert for sporadic sounds like effects and sweeps.
I haven't seen any other reverbs do that yet which is a shame.

Hmmm that's got me thinking - maybe it's a good idea for us non-donglers to just register this R2 anyway and perhaps in future they'll ease up their dongle-only policy, like Kush did (with their Transformer plugins atleast), I think Eventide too (and Nugen?)... and Wave Arts - and.. Waves?!fgimian wrote:

It can't hurt to try... Just so you know the process (and there''s a video somewhere that focusrite put up for this too)...MogwaiBoy wrote:Hmmm that's got me thinking - maybe it's a good idea for us non-donglers to just register this R2 anyway and perhaps in future they'll ease up their dongle-only policy, like Kush did (with their Transformer plugins atleast), I think Eventide too (and Nugen?)... and Wave Arts - and.. To register R2, you have to download the file from Exponential Audio, install it, and once your DAW scans for new plugins, a window pops up where you enter in your code (provided on the FPC site), which then requires you to log into your iLok account and at that point it looks for the physical iLok to deposit the license.
The big question is whether or not you need your iLok to have the license deposited to your account or not.
If I didn't own an iLok, I would just go the route of making a Slate subscription that includes the iLok. Maybe you like what they offer and keep the subscription and in case you don't like it, you demoed some cool products, got an iLok and got to keep R2.

Actually, you don't need to install the plugin. You can click the little icon in the top right (looks like it has 3 dots) and enter the code directly in iLok License Manager. It should then appear under the All Licenses tab.
I'm almost certain this will work as I have many products not linked to my dongle but inside my account
You can move licenses from your account to your dongle back and forth as you please. If the manufacturer supports computer-based auth, you can drag to your PC / Mac in the left sidebar instead. Companies like Softube and Soundtoys allow computer-based auth, but I prefer the dongle to be honest

Good to know! I didn't know it could be done this way... I sometimes run into issues with scanning, so I rather have the license activated before running the plugin in my DAW.fgimian wrote:Actually, you don't need to install the plugin.
