Yep, you don't even have to download R2, just add the code to your iLok list in the iLok Manager.

I'd agree that it would be smart to register it to your iLok account regardless. Pretty sure they will eventually go with soft iLok as most others have already. They just have nothing to gain from insisting on hardware dongle and plenty to loose from artificially limiting their customer base in a highly competitive setting.

If they wanted to make things NFR, they easily could have, especially since iLok has that capability built in. For instance, the UVI Synsations gift you get with KORG controllers is marked Not For Resale in the iLok manager.

I'd put the R2 as one of the best giveaways this year. It has a resizable gui, gate effects, lots of filters , control of early and late reflections and chorus modulation of the tails. I am very impressed. - Scotty

What's immoral about selling something for a price people who could not take advantage of the offer are willing to pay in an instance? Win-win situation, the sellers don't needt it, the buyers are happy to purchase it for the price. No need to be holier than thou in every condition of life (when it isn't even "holier than thou" anyway).

Definitely an oversight on their part, not implementing a check
to verify Focusrite ownership. Seems they are a little slow about
some things. They will figure it out at some point no doubt.

Already, you can't really just sign up for an account like was possible
when the program started.

Enjoy it while you can, I suspect they will account for these things
in the near future.

If i had to guess then i would say they didn't consider it necessary to spend time, effort and money on preventing it.

Yeah, its sad.

After all it was a gift, not an invitation to grab it and sell it for profit.

Im sure the Focusrite guys are loving it and cant wait to procure the next offer of this kind...

People who bought Focusrite gear get a free bit of Exponential software despite Exponential earning nothing from them.

Someone like me who bought Phoenixverb a couple of years ago, thus earning Exponential money, don't get anything.

To me, that's a curious business strategy.

Of course Exponential Audio earn something from it. Attention, and potential new customers for their other plugins. Of course Focusrite earn something from it. New customers for their hardware, which get attracted by the generous monthly offerings.

Really, it isn't a gift, as if you had birthday, and your mom bought a present for you. Even if Exponential Audio and Focusrite didn't make a deal (which i think they did), it is in both companies interest.

It is an NFR license. People are selling their unregistered iLok codes.

@chk071 I entirely agree with you on the reasons why both companies are doing it. It's about growth. However what about the existing Exponential users?

Potential customer A gets R2 free and can upgrade to R4 at a 50% discount.

Actual customer B who paid $100+ dollars for Phoenixverb two years ago gets no free software and gets the same 50% discount.

Of course, when Exponential explode growthwise and take over the world, I am more than happy to say I was foolish!

Well, you'll have to be against sales, and intro offers, or other kinds of discounts then too, with that argumentation. I know some people are, for others it is great that they can afford software or hardware they wouldn't be able to afford otherwise. IMO, it's really great, because this way, everyone gets served, early adopters, who can't wait to buy the plugin, people who buy it on a sale, because they can wait, but the price is tempting. And now even hardware users, who get a monthly plugin as a bonus, and an additional appeal to buy, or use the hardware of the respective company. And if you don't need it, you can even sell it, and make someone else happy with a bargain. I really can't see anything bad, immoral, or whatever about that. YMMV.
