Has anyone heard any info on if 'game mode' is useful for optimising the running of DAWs?

I hear it's supposed to turn off lots of temporarily unnecessary processes so might be?

Or it might just break processes us DAW users need. :ud:

Dunno. Win 10 works fine here, but their borg-like mentality about updates seems to break things until you reinstall sometimes.

So, do you have it? Or are you just waiting? I know how to trigger it to update, and have already made a system image just in case, but before I bother i'd like to hear from someone else who has tried it.

Well, I know for a fact it will install ASAP. As to when, I don't know. I was simply saying that win 10 is cool but the updates are brutal (when you have it set up the way you want, BAM!)

I've never had any issue myself but i'm aware of some people's stories. I can understand why MS they do, especially for any non 'pro/enterprise' licenses, since most non pro/enterprise users (or more to say the latter's admins), just won't do it as half of them are clueless so need automatic security updates for example.

As I say, I take a OS system image two weeks just in case something really bad goes wrong. I've only got 'home' so not as much control to stop updates.

From Cakewalk, and about SONAR I know . . . but

Short Version
Conclusion

The observed performance with Game Mode did not to hold up to its claims of smoother performance, at least for SONAR running on a well tuned system. This could be because Game Mode allocates a fixed amount of resources while SONAR wants to use all CPU cores. On a DAW where SONAR is the only app running turning on Game Mode could result in worse performance in this scenario. On an underpowered system where there are other background processes, game mode could be beneficial by preventing unwanted interactions with other apps or services.

Our suggestion for now is not to use Game mode for SONAR, at least for the initial release of the Creator’s Update. Perhaps a future update may improve on performance, but at this time we don’t see any improvement in SONAR’s performance with this feature.
Take it for what it's worth

I'm not surprised

I wish more than anything I could "freeze" doze into it's current and excellently running version.

Sadly, won't happen. They will borg it on me and countless others, somehow, some way

Just disable updates, until recently I remained on 1511, after all the dust cleared from the anniversary update I let my PC's update to that, then turned updates off again, have no intention of updating Win10 again anytime soon if at all.

Now now, I'ma a get pissed

Doesn't work that way, and frankly, you should know. Win 10 IS the borg queen, and "we have vays of making you upgrade/date" ;)

Don't take my word for it (nobody does anyways) just look into the history.

lol, Well i stayed on 1511 which I think was released around July/August last year until a couple of weeks ago, simply by disabling updates. I periodically checked that it was still disabled which it always was, and before I let it update a couple of weeks ago it reported last update as July/August last year depending which of my 4 machines is in question. I don't doubt you or your experience, just that my experience seems to be different.

Is that on Home or Pro?

I think Jinotsuh is right, as I have disabled updates as well and it seems to have improved stability quite a bit.

Go to the command line next to the windows logo and type "services", scroll down to Windows Update, right click and select Properties, on the "Startup Type" drop down select Disabled.

As far as I know that fully turns it off, not just stops it until the next startup.

I then follow these tips and have seen a nice stability improvement.

Don't expect too much. It is supposed to work pretty well with some games, while it hardly has any, if any impact on other games. I think it works much better if you just set your computer to the high performance profile, or, use the tweaks which every DAW developing company recommends, like Steinberg describes here: https://helpcenter.steinberg.de/hc/en-u ... s-for-DAWs That should have a higher impact than what the game mode does.

BTW, you can download the ISO's with the Creators Update already, to install it from DVD, or from a USB stick. You can also use the Media Creation Tool to do so. I'm installing the update right now on my laptop.

I stayed on 1511 for a while with updates disabled. Then I left my DAW computer on overnight whilst I was uploading some large files and woke up to find it had miraculously updated to 1607. Fortunately this didn't break too many VST authorisations but it was quite frustrating. I'm currently running the Creators update on another PC and it seems okay, but there doesn't seem to be any real reason to update any time soon, if you can hold it at bay.

Both, works with either, I have a couple of each.

I just go Control Panel - Administrative Tools - Services, and scroll down to 'Windows Updates' right click and disable. I use to keep checking it all the time to make sure it stays stuck, but don't bother much anymore because it has always remained disabled. All my machines are permanently connected to the net (except when switched off :D ) Had no issues since I started doing it. I have never kept Windows up to date, XP SP3 I think was the last then disabled, Windows 7 SP1 then disabled, can't recall earlier, but have never been one to allow Windows to automatically update, never had an issue with it, well not one that I knew of or affected anything I do anyway.

On this laptop, which is Windows 10 Home, I just checked and it says,

Your device is up to date. Last checked: ‎1/‎22/‎2017, ‏‎7:49 AM

Which would have been the last time I let it update
