You need to take the New York attributions with a grain of salt because New York is a place where people come to get away from where they are originally from.

The Ramones are from Queens, so they were actually New Yorkers.

I have heard repeatedly that some Brit Pop bands were from Sheffield, but I don't know any examples.

I think it helps to have a troubled population with drug, employment, poverty, and other problems. Oddly, that boosts creativity, while wealthy cities tend to be boring.

Sheffield was the mecca of synth-pop/industrial: The Human League, Heaven 17, ABC, Clock DVA, Cabaret Voltaire, etc etc

And then later with acid house, the Warp label.
