Follow-up to my post about interfaces :)

Looking around at monitors and I can see this is just as difficult as choosing an interface. For reference, I'm hoping to keep the price for a good pair down to around $400. If anyone has recommendations for any monitors that were top of the line years back and are now pretty affordable, that'd help me break out of the "settling for low quality due to budget" issue I have I think. Although it almost feels like everything I look at is expensive no matter how old.

I'm not 100% set on buying used, but I don't have any big time music stores near me that'd sell monitors so it's mostly what I'm eyeing for now.

JBL LSR305 is very popular.

I was looking for some portable monitors and today I had the chance to audition a pair of Genelec 8010A's. They're dope as f***, ordered them immediately.

Genelecs here too. I have the older 1029A's with a 1091A sub. Love 'em. If I had to replace them, the 8010A's are top of the list.

This is like a Genelec family meeting :D

8040A here and love them, accurate and reliable.

Out of my price range a bit, but I've been considering a pair of Adam F7s too.

My issue is that I'm one of those stuck with a small bedroom and the location where the monitors will be is near a corner. I also will have the monitors unfortunately pretty much right against the wall. That means it's best that those holes you see on monitors (they're called bass reflectors or something?) be on the front rather than the back I guess. I'm somewhat tempted with the JBL LSR305, but I see it has that "bass hole" or whatever on the back, so it might not be ideal for my situation.

I'm trying to save money, but at the same time I don't want to skimp out on design since I know this is an important aspect to setting up a studio. The Genelec 8010a quite frankly look like cheap speakers I'd keep wanting to have replaced rather than ever feeling satisfied with them. 3" is way too small.

Just get Sonarworks Reference that will fix the many of the problems with your room. And yeah get at least 5" woofer to get decent bass response.

Obviously you haven't heard them (do it and you'll be shocked; they wipe the floor with many 5''). The sound coming out of them is very 3D and they go uncomfortably loud too at the recommended 1-1.5m.

With the size, I made the same mistake and bought a pair of 6.5", which proved way too much for my small, problematic room.

I'm also in the market for some new monitors, after my lovely ex-wife sold my Mackie HR824's behind my back. :x

My price range is a bit higher, but is it fair to say that Genelec and Adam are the best companies to look at?
Incomplete list of my gear: 1/8" audio input jack.

^Focal too.

Going to go with the JBL LSR305s for now I think. Somewhere down the road when I feel I can do better (or even have the skill to discern how they're better), I'll get something more high end.

My original plan was to get some used Fostex NF-1A speakers from Japan which apparently became somewhat of a standard in studios over there after the old Yamaha NS10 was on its way out, but with importing fees plus having to buy a transformer since it's 100V, it's just more hassle I don't need.

Bruh I got them LSR305's. They clutch homeboy.

So I received my 8010A's...

Made a playlist of well known tunes and for the next 3 hours :o I was constantly amazed at all those details I never heard before in those tunes (mistakes were revealed too). And the reverb tails reproduction was a revelation.

Construction is top notch, apart from the audio connector, which due to the small size of them, bends the cables at the back when the speakers are back tilted. Thinking of getting a pair of mic stands to place them on.

All in all, I'm :D with my purchase. High quality stuff.

Keyword there is "ex" :D

But as for Genelec and Adam the best?

Everyone's ears are different so what one might say sounds best to them might sound like crap to someone else.

The best is if you can get to demo monitors from the store in your own room if that is not possible go to a store that has monitors on display and listen to stuff you know very well or have made yourself and do some critical listening.

Those new Focal Shape are looking very promising for the money I'd say but I've never heard Focal's myself so I can't say for sure.

Damn now I really want a pair :dog:
