Bad Conclusions?

I took a test late this evening at http://www.ipn.at/ipn.asp?BHX to find out which of my brain hemispheres is dominant. I got an 11/8 score. Assuming that the result is accurate, it states that I am favoring my left-side brain hemisphere. It seems to make sense, I am right-handed.
So, it seems, if people are left-handed chances are the result will always be that they (left-handed people) are favoring their right-side brain hemisphere.
So then I did some more Googling using these search words "brain hemisphere music lyrics" and found this site http://brainworldmagazine.com/music-rhy ... e-brain-2/
The article seems to be stating "facts" that are contrary to my beliefs. It's saying that since I favour my left-side brain hemisphere I should be good at writing lyrics (but I don't think I am).
Excerpt:
Russian composer Shebalin and British composer Benjamin Britten both continued writing musical works although they experienced impairment to their spoken language after having sustained strokes in the left hemisphere.
I'm sleepy, I only skimmed that article. I'm calling it a day. I have to reread the whole thing tomorrow and maybe read more from other sources. Goodnight y'all.

It is generally a fallacy to think that aggregate findings infer the specific. Those tests are at best a weak predictor, but, even if perfectly accurate, it doesn't mean that other aggregate findings, i.e., people who favor the left brain are good lyric writers, hold for you specifically.
If you want to get better at writing lyrics, stop taking tests and start writing lyrics. Otherwise, don't worry so much about it.

I took the test for shits and giggles; I scored a 10/13, which doesn't surprise me, since I'm fairly ambidextrous. I read somewhere (I don't remember where, but it wasn't on the internet...
) that the left brain/right brain theory is hogwash. Here are a few articles about it :

I took one of these years ago and according to those results, me brain sides are equal; ambidextrous.
So this means I have to be great at every single thing on earth, isn't it.

I admit, I didn't choose the right word there. I should have stated "I should be suitable at writing lyrics (but I don't think I am)." instead of "I should be good at writing lyrics (but I don't think I am)." But what I was trying to say is that "I want to know in advance if I am suited for certain tasks before I commit dedication and hard work to it". I already know I am suited to play speed scrabble and I always have this thought "Why am I wasting my time trying to write lyrics when in the first place my brain might not be suited for it... I should just focus on what I already know I am good at".ghettosynth wrote:It is generally a fallacy to think that aggregate findings infer the specific. It's just that speed scrabble is only satisfying during the game. After the game, nothing really was created. Songwriting is different, there's satisfaction in creating something so I really really want to succeed at it but again what if the articles I read is not junk science and the Left-Right Hemisphere ideas are not bogus and it's really true that the left-side brain hemisphere truly and absolutely is responsible for logical thought process and the right-side brain hemisphere truly and absolutely is responsible for creative thought process?

Not necessarily. being ambidextreous could just mean that you are not neglecting one brain hemisphere over the other. But... maybe people like Bobby Fischer, a right-hander and therefore most likely a favourer of the left-side brain hemisphere, must have neglected his right-side brain hemisphere. According to "more" articles, Bobby Fischer, being right-handed should be great at logic games, like chess, and he is. But the thing is, maybe Bobby Fischer overused his left-brain hemisphere and his is like being on steroid compared to other people who favoured their left-brain hemisphere. Just because one is ambidextrous it doesn't mean both brain hemispheres are going to be "like on steroid". If you are ambidextrous and you were "idle" meaning that you didn't overuse both brain hemispheres then you might have wasted a great mind? Question mark there.jancivil wrote:I took one of these years ago and according to those results, me brain sides are equal; ambidextrous.

Well, it would be interesting to see more results from other people. Your test results seem to state that you are favoring your right-side brain hemisphere and therefore you should be left-handed more so than ambidextrous. Are you more left-handed than ambidextrous? I mean how would one actually know if one is perfectly ambidextrous? Maybe to be truly ambidextrous one has to have a perfect 50/50 ratio and even 49/51 or 51/49 won't do?DocAtlas wrote:I took the test for shits and giggles; I scored a 10/13, which doesn't surprise me, since I'm fairly ambidextrous. So yeah, let's pretend for a sec that the test is accurate and let us report the results. I am just curious? What if 100 percent of the result concludes that if you are left-handed your test results will conclude you favor the right-side brain hemisphere? And vice versa?
There is a thread about "Internet Connection Speed" and people just give results for that just like that. This test takes longer but the results might be more important than "my internet connection is so much faster than yours". Aaargghh, I bet that might offend people. Okay, humans, in advance... no offense meant.

Hahaha. But I bet you yourself have provided internet links to prove a point. I bet a lot of people here, just at KVR, have done that. No?thecontrolcentre wrote:But .... it said .... on the internet.

The results of the test should be testable. It already seems true in Bobby Fischer's case. He is right-handed and he was suitable for chess. There should be records of right-handed chess playing people doing much better at chess compared to left-handed chess-playing people. Most chess champions should be right-handed if that test is accurate. Most scientists too? Whoa, I just Googled it... Einstein is left-handed but a lot of chess players say he is mediocre at chess, Oppenheimer too they say is mediocre at chess. Remember... the title of my thread is "Bad Conclusions?".

Here's the thing, though. Post after post about wishing to write the great pop songs but not being any good is pretty much like someone complaining on and on how they can't get laid. No one cares, dig.

What Jan? You have no control? You need to participate in my threads even if you are sick of them? Why don't you just simply go away if you are on the point of vomit, if that is your desire?jancivil wrote:Here's the thing, though. Anyways, so, I did more reading. On the internet.
Based on the articles that I have read on the internet, this seems to be the consensus relating to the functions of the brain hemispheres:
"The left side of your brain controls the muscles on the right side of your body, and it is responsible for language along with logical and mathematical thinking. Meanwhile, the right brain controls the muscles on the left side of your body, and it is associated with spatial reasoning and musical abilities."
https://www.reference.com/science/left- ... 879d96fc9a
So, based on that, righties are suitable for writing lyrics.
And lefties are suitable for music-making.
And bothies are suitable at doing both. To me, bothies are freaks. Who wouldn't want to be that?
Also, are consensus bad? How many times has scientific consensus been wrong?
