Hello,

assume for a moment that I can''t afford a new stick of RAM for my softsynth computer...

System Information tells me that of my 256MB RAM, only between 109 and 117MB are "available" and this is with no open programs, a bunch of startup programs disabled. AnalogX's Maxmem says much the same thing.

The funny thing is that I remember when I had more RAM available on the same machine. I used to be able to load the NS 6 drum kit sound font; now I can't.

It's a Celereopn 1200 with 256 MB of RAM. It's gone through a couple of changes in the last half year:
1. Replaced the SB Audigy with an Audiophile 2496
2. Upgraded from WIn 98se to XP Home

The RAM problem preceded both these upgrades and still persists.

TIA for any leads on how to free up more RAM.

Man, sounds like you got a serious memory leak there somewhere. I'm gonna let someone else handle this one. I do know If your running XP you have system monitors that can show you detailed memory usage. It would help to know what your OS is.

It was the OS change. XP is a resource pig.

HI Magpel I'm dealing with a simular issue right now, what I have decided to do is to create a dual boot setup where one partition contains all my music soft and nothing else, totally optimized for music thus freeing up the ram by eliminating all background processes. Easier said than done though here is a page with links to that proccess.

That said though you are really going to be limited with 256 ram try to pick up at least another 256 , used maye? or wait for one of those mail in rebate sale I bought one stick of 256 for $30 CAN last year on a reabate deal.

Nah, I'm runnin a 128K RAM an upgraded from ME without that much drain. Try reseting your paging file setting to 1000 MB initial and 1000 MB maximum. Worked for me.

Go to tweakxp.com and musicxp.com and combine both suggested tweaks lists. Trust me it did wonders for me. Like I said I'm only running 128K RAM and have no problems at all.

Really

I thought 128 meg was the minimum just to run the operating system? I'll have to get my tweaks finished this weakend and see what boosts I can get

ME? Huge difference. ME isn't that much of a resource pig. XP, on the other hand, is a resource pig. Normal install will put you at about 95-105 or so megs taken up. With SIGNIFICANT tweaks, I've heard of 35-45 megs taken.

Yes, 128K is indeed the mininmal requirements for running an OS which is why my Orion Platinum was previously crashing until I changed my page file setting to 1000 MB initial and 1000 MB maximum. This creates a psuedo RAM if you will. Since I had done this tweak I have had not one crash in Orion.

I was getting ready to head to my local CompUSA and buy a 512K RAM card and probably still will, but for now it's copasetic.

Ok, you repeatedly keep saying you got 128k of ram. You got some calculator or something? Are you meaning to say 128 megs of ram instead? I only ask, because I've seen you state that several times now.

I've read some interesting articles on the page file and it's optimal size (which depends on the amount of hardware ram you've got installed) by martin walker on the site of soundonsound

else: i've had similar problems with my ram and it turned out my ram was damaged. You can run memtest86, a freeware ram test to check that out...

But i do advice to get some more ram, 256 meg is not much at all...
